What other steps? Besides the Dawn wash, I'd also use the clay, then Z2. You should clay, if necessary, before using any wax/polish.

You can no real issue there.

The only thing to remember is that Z-2 is really designed as the final layer, so it is not as good as Z-5 for filling in light scratches.

For the 1st time or spring clean on my cars:
#1: Wash with Dish Soap to remove all previous Wax
#2: Go over all larger scratches with Meguirs Scratch X
#3: 2-4 Coats of Z-5
#4: 1-2 Coats of Z-2

After the 1st time I usually:
#1: wash with Turtle Wax soap or some other one that WILL NOT strip wax
#2: Go over all larger scratches with Meguirs Scratch X
#3: 1 Coat Z-5
#4: 1 Coat Z-2

Without knowing what the "other steps" you don't want to do are, I will add that it's not recommended to apply Zaino over another polish or wax.
