I am using Meguiars 'Gold Class' for the first time and am hoping it will turn out really well.

I've heard people say to wash the car with Dawn (or other dishwash soap) before. I thought dish washer detergent dries out the paint?

Your confusing products and processes, the wash with Dawn thing is mainly for people using Zaino (and other paint products that are not applied on top of other waxes and polishes) Zaino is only applied to bare paint. Meguiars Gold Class is a cleaner wax (Zaino is not) so it is not that critical to remover other waxes with Dawn before putting on Gold Class. If using GC, you can just wash as normal with car wash and apply.

And on the dry out paint thing, Zaino users are only washing their car ONCE with Dawn before their first application of Zaino, the Dawn will not hurt the paint in any way.
