Uh Oh, Better Get Maaco!

Just a quick question: Does MAACO offer a good paint job? I know the $299 deal they advertise is basically for nothing more than a deal-sweetener when selling your car, but what if I want a good paint job that'll last over 5 years?

Re: Uh Oh, Better Get Maaco!

Here's what I can tell you. They are warrented againt fading for something like three years. Thats it. I wouldn't recommend washing them at the car wash, and if you were to get a chip, touch it up right away, they tend to peel. when I was at VoTech I repainted a car for a guy who had two chips in the paint on the hood, went to the car wash and blew better than 25% of the paint off the hood. then drove to maaco, on the way down the highway MORE paint flaked off. Now I will say, it was 11 years ago, and I'm sure some people that post on this site have been MAACO'd and were very pleased, but this was my experence.

MAACO did a good job on an older car I had... I paid $380 I think, and it was definately worth it... I went to pick it up and had a great shine.. I was surprised actually how it came out... Shined like that for a while but I let the car go and so did the paint after while... It's a good choice for a beater car or something like that... I wouldn't take that 01' Viper there though

Yea they warrenty against fading but not oxidation. I lived in Fl and the paint job lasted about 2 years. I tried waxing it 3 stage buffing and everything. To me they are only good for about a year.

$299 would barely buy you half-way decent materials to paint a whole car, let alone any labor charges. Don't even think of letting them do any prep work, especially if it's for that price.

Re: Uh Oh, Better Get Maaco!

TRUST ME DUDES, THE '01 VIPER DON'T NEED MAACO, IT'S THE '89 CAMARO DAILY DRIVER THAT'S GETTIN IT I called MAACO and they have the basic ($299), the 4-YR ($599) and the PREMIUM (Over $800). If they're warrantying it for 4 years, that oughtta be god for at least 6. Novody around here will paint the car for uner a grand, which makes you wonder how the heck MAACO's doing it so cheap, but they are probably getting some huge bulk-discount on their materials. I'll give 'em a try and post some pics when I get it done. Thanks for the info!

Earl Scheib sucks... They will paint your tail pipes and molding for free!

MAACO is better quality.

Re: Uh Oh, Better Get Maaco!

yeah. I remember the first time I saw an SHO I thought it had been maaco'd. everything is body color.

The way Maaco does it so cheap is it is not a urethane or laquer, it is a bottom-rung Alkyd Enamel, atleast on their cheapo paint jod

Re: Uh Oh, Better Get Maaco!

If you do end up going to MAACO, I strongly recommend that you prep the car yourself and make sure the final sand is done with 360 grit sandpaper. I would also advise that you bring your own material such as PPG paint because they mix their own paint in house and it is the cheapest sythetic crap that you have or will ever see and has no UV protectant in it. If this is a beater car that you don't really care about, then just pay the $299 and get the "Ambassador Treatment", however I still advise against it.

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for 9 times out of 10. If you don't care a lot about the car or if it's not worth the money, then try maaco I guess.

Re: Uh Oh, Better Get Maaco!

I got my car painted at Maaco. They did a good job. I was aware of all the horror stories about Maaco but I checked out my local Maaco and they didnt seem that bad. Check out this link for pics. I also got more on my cardomain page. I was on a budget and only paid $350. Im happy with the way it turned out. Better than a multi colored thirdgen, I dont need to help contribute to the stereotype
