Stainless Steel Exhaust tips cleaning

What is the best way to get that black gunk thats imbedded in the tips off. I have used the polish but it doesnt get the black stuff off. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks guys.

300 grit sandpaper will make them look like new. Forget the other stuff, a waste of time. Remember stainless is not like chrome.
