Regarding stock rims

I have a 1988 pontiac 6000 s/e. Before you laugh, it's in awesome shape. I just have a question regarding the rims. Now, they're stock pontiac rims. In the 1988 year, would they have been clear coated or what? I want to clean them, but they look like they have some stains on them, and they don't seem to be scrubbing off. I can clean the brake dust off, but that's about it. I would like to be able to polish them, and make them look really nice. What kind of product would you reccommend? I don't mind putting alot of elbow greese into them to make them look nice. Thanks.

This answer only works if you're already a Zaino person: Polish them with Z5. Works great on my painted alloys.

Otherwise, try waxing them. Only problem is that rims get very hot during driving/braking and will melt off most waxes. I'd try some form of polymer like Z.
