Just how good should I expect a repainted bumper to look?

Post Just how good should I expect a repainted bumper to look?

I recently had my rear bumber replaced and re-painted (some guy hit me from behind while I was at a red light).

The paint, while very smooth, has an "orange peel" look to it in the light if you look closely. Do you know what I mean? The paint shop said they will re-spray it for me.

I was just wondering how good it should look. Should it look like a brand new car?

Yeah, any good shop should be able to make it look at least as good as the factory finish, if not better. The body shops I've used in the past did excellent paint work, and you should expect the same from any good shop. If it doesn't match the rest of the car or looks bad, make them do it until it's right.

I spent the summer in my Uncle's body shop and I learned a few things...

1. On more than a few occasions, a car was repainted AFTER the dealer got it. (Minor blemishes, lot-boy accidents, rail dust)
2. Most factory paint is far from perfect
3. My Jeep was orange peeled from the factory AND repainted AT LEAST once (I got it brand new)
4. A good painter will have NO PROBLEM blending the panels, but because the bumper covers are plastic and the hood/fenders metal, they may not have been perfect to begin with (saw this on a Vette we had, might be because of the flex additive for the bumpers??)

I'm no expert, I spent 1 summer in the shop, so I don't want all the body shop experts saying I have no clue. These are just my opinions!!!

Yeah, you just need some finish work. Have them wet sand the area and you will be fine.

How the clear comes out is almost all technique. The painter was probably trying to match the factory finish and over did it. Believe me, matching colors is easy compared to matching paint textures!

Rather than pay for a "do over" or wet sand and buff, they probably decided to see if you would notice it. Believe it or not, but most people wouldn't have.

Get them to fix it.

I took my car back and got it back today. It looks much better. They sanded the approriate areas and re-painted the part of bumper. It looks good.

Never Forget. The squeeky wheel usually gets oiled, \

I had a '92 Ragtop [Wht/Black top] Camaro RS and had it repainted. They messed up in a few places. After I inspected it, I had them redo it. Then after I inspected it again, they redid a place again. Too much overspary is someplaces.

But now it looks good, or at least it did 3 years ago before I sold it.
