Flat Black Exterior or Not?

Hey guys,

So right now, I'm finally getting around to getting my car back and running on the streets. It's been almost 2 years now, and a simple project turned into complete overhaul pretty much. It was wrecked when I was 16 and it's now needing an engine too. Well, I got the frame straightened, purchased all the body panels, and the new engine will be ready in less than a month. So I'm wanting to get my car together real soon. My only problem is right now, the car is factory red and my replacement panels came off a green V6. I'm also getting low on funds. My original intent was to just repaint my car back to it's factory color and leave it or go all out with something custom, but I don't have the money and probally won't have enough until the end of summer or next spring to afford to all of that. So I've been thinking of flat blacking the entire car (NOT RATTLE CANNED!). I'm already going to paint my enginebay flat black. Right now, it has some scratches that I'm wanting to get rid of before the new engine goes in. I have everything disassembled and it's ready for paint, I just need to decide how I'm going to do it. Btw, when I say completly disassembled, the car is totally stripped right now because I wanted to get everything out of it so I could delete a couple items, paint some, and not worry about over spray on anything. So what do you think?

Here's how it will look when complete: Flat Black exterior with white pinstripping. I also have a SS hood, I'm shaving the door locks and trunk lock, shaving the antenea, flat black engine bay, I have chrome Z28 and LT1 badges, chrome camaro rear fillin, and chrome wheels. The interior was dark grey with leather, but now everything is dark black. I've painted everything, I just need to get something done with my seats and the inserts in the door panels because those still are dark grey. So guys, what do you think?

Hey man,

You're going to think I'm crazy, but here's my opnion. I'd do one of two things.

1 - If you dont need to drive to work or school PARK THE CAR. You're young, use the money you save on insurance and put that towards the paint job, you put all this money in the car to paint it flat black? nahh, our cars are attention grabbers.

2 - Take out a loan and get it done right. Also, get a brand new color man, something eyecatching and metallic. I like the custom exterior modifications you're doing. Shaved always looks better, and not just on cars either

Good Luck.

Flat black on the WHOLE car IMO wouldn't look good. Now, flat black stripes, that would be cool. You seem to have a cool base and I wouldn't mess it up with a hack paint job.

BTW, what did you/are you going to use to shave the locks/trunk/antenna with? I'm wanting to do this too. And also, do you have any pictures? I'd like to see everything!

Good luck, hope it turns out sick...

My car is flat black right now and it looks like its primered to most people. Its sitting in the driveway, and I have people ask me all the time what color am I going to paint it. But I think it looked better before it was sitting there for 3 months. But im going to go to gloss black or something else after it gets running just because I dont like it looking like its been primed. Im thinking charcoal or a dark blue.

I agree, the car will look unfinished.

Did anyone ever follow through on this?
I'm about to flat black mine w/ a VFN sunoco hood and ZR28 rear spoiler. Thinking about using either an epoxy primer or base black w/ satin clear.

Suggestions on what to use? I've had limited paint experience w/ enamels and base/clear.
