factory defect in roof?
hey guys, I have a 2000 ss and I recently noticed on the outside roof of my car there are little circles, underneath the paint. They almost look like rivits. I noticed them before but now my paint is starting to bubble up slightly. I believe its a factory defect, because my car is always immaculate and hardly ever in the sun.
Most of the circles are on the outside edge of the roof, although there are also some on the panels that lead from the roof to the main body of the car. Any info on what's happening will be appreciated. Jeff in Hawaii

I have a few of these tiny "bubble's" also. They are located on the bar which runs over the car, on the lower egde where the bar meets the rear fenders.
I believe it is a "factory issue" as my brother's Firehawk has the same issue also. Both cars are garage kept, and have never been repainted.
I've also noticed on my SS that when the car has been sitting in bright sunlight for an extended period of time, ie; at a car show, there appear to be more of these "bubbles", but when the car is back in the garage and cooled, there are only a few.
I have decided to live with it as repainting the bar could cause more problems than needed. You can't notice them unless you know where to look.

If either of them were repainted, did you wax the car within a month of the paint going on?
I didnt read either of your posts but I remember having read it a day or 2 ago and then thinking of this today in class (autobody school)
If you wax the paint to fast it doesnt let the lower levels of paint dry, because the wax doesnt let the paint breathe.

THAT IS A FACTORY DEFECT!!!!
Go to your nearest Chevy dealer and demand they re-paint your roof! Mine was the same way. I have 2001 Camaro SS, T-Tops and the same thing was happening. The sun heats up the bad aftermarket resin, therefore it bakes under the paint. It will just get worse and it's bad for your paint and clear coat, especially over time!
Word on the street is a batch(could be in the thousands) of F-bodys ran thru the assembly line and they(GM factory in Canada) ran out of their good factory stock resin that bonds the roof to the body, they then had to move quick to keep the assembly line going so they used some really bad aftermarket resin.
CHEVY REFUSES TO MAKE A PUBLIC NOTICE ABOUT THIS F-BODY DEFECT. I took mine to my local dealer in Ocala, Florida at Palm Chevrolet and they played dumb. After he checked the computers, this was going on all over the United States.
Have your dealer re-paint your roof and demand it be done right. Get everything in writing, make copies, Suggest to your body shop manager in simple direct english that you expect a perfect job and you want it done right within a reasonable time frame. Your dealer should have your vehicle an appointment within 2 weeks after you make them aware of the problem. Your Chevy body shop should have the roof done in no more than three business days. Ask if you can take before and after photos and call your your Attorney and tell him to "get ready".

"dude, wake up"?! "smell the coffee"?!
I just asked a question
I doubt the dealer is going to just say "OK". If there had been a bulletin, it might have saved some time/headache arguing with the dealer.
Next time the SS is in for service, I'll be "discussing" how to fix this problem, and "push" them if necessary to correct it.

Guys, go here
http://autopedia.com/html/NHTSA.html
Look for TSB 030898001. I got my roof replaced for free. That is how I got it color matched for free. Have to log out, but this should help every one out that is still under warranty.
Good luck,
PJ

Ray, sorry, I am at work and this puter will lock up I am am logged in for very long.
At the site, scroll down to search for tsbs, then use thier search on the right hand side to drill down to your specific model etc. It is the same TSB for 00, 01, & 02 ALL fbodies. Make sure to check the block for details after you enter the body structure, pillars info, but before you hit submit. I know this seems confusing as hell, but if I switch back and forth between sites the puter freezes, so I am trying to remember the steps. I will try to stay logged in this time. If it freezes again, I will try to put every step in link for when I get home. Oh, this used to be in the ALLDATA data base and was much easier to do, but they dumped it.
I have the complete printed TSB at home and can scan it in an email it to somebody if they can host it for every body to down load.

SSMOKEDU, you are welcome. I try to only post if I can really help. I guess that accounts for the low post count. I am only posting this to put it back on top. That way, more folks might see it.
It is bad that GM is not making the dealers at least fix it when you do go in and complain. they all just act dumb and stone wall you, hoping that you will never find out. A GM engineer told me about the TSB at the 03 WCA Winter Nationals, when he saw the botched repair the dealer had previously done. The site that I posted is not under thier control, so every TSB & recall for every car will always be there. The site is updated pretty frequently.
BTW, you can do a general search for your car and get a whole list of stuff that you will be amazed at. I got my 4L60e replaced for free in the S10 after warranty, because I had it in during warranty for a problem covered by a TSB that they just ignored. I found the site and made them eat it.
Dealers get paid a predetermined amount for warranty work and can lose money on a warranty repair. they will definately stick it to you. That is what is so good about these boards, we all get smarter about dealing with our cars and thier problems.
Good luck,
PJ
