Does paint need to breathe?
This may be an advanced question, but one I've heard different answers to. Personally, I'm inclined to believe that once paint is fully cured from the factory, there is no so called "breathing" taking place. Basically, I've seen some carnauba manufacturers claim that paint needs to breathe and that a sealant does not allow this. To me, this sounds like a load of BS, but if anyone might have any useful insight I'd appreciate it!
Thanks,
Mike

Paint like the plastic body panels on F-bodies do not need to breath. Both are polymers that are inorganic ( not living). If paint needed to breath than why are all new cars coated with a clearcoat. This is carnuba manufacture's means to mis-inform the general public. Since they can not win with shine and durability they prey on our ignorance.

Fully cured paint finishes do not need to "breathe",at best the finish needs enough time to fully cure before applying any wax (carnauba or chemical). The popular misconception is that this "cure time" takes anywhere from 30-90 days (i.e.,"My bodyshop told me not to wax the car for 2 months!").Believe me,if a modern BC/CC paint needs 60 days to cure,it's time to find a new shop!I wet-sand,buff,glaze,and wax a refinished car/panel in anywhere from 3-5 hours (if we bake it) up to about 24-36 hours if it air dries, the times,of course, depending on what type of clear-coat is used.

Thanks guys! I figured this "breathing" crap was just another ploy by carnauba makers to fool customers into thinking sealants are bad or unnecessary. On the flip side, if paint needed to breathe, what would happen if you let it choke by supposedly using a sealant? LOL! Guess those guys never thought of the answer to that one!
Thanks again, you both helped me confirm what I pretty much already believed.

NO! I waxed my car when I got it outta the shop when they told me not to and the paint started to fade within hours from black to a greyish-brown and flaked off to the touch.. I called a car nursery and they had me wash the wax off with dishsoap and water it with a solution of 2/4 water 1/4 simple green & 1/4 miracle grow and the cars color was restored within 2 days and the flaked off paint grew back after another 3 days...

Put a glob of wax over your face and see just how easy it is to breathe with carnuba!!!
