Clay Bars-do they work

Do claybars really work? What is there purpose? My friend got one over the weekend for his black Z because there are a lot of water spots on it. We tried it a little bit and it didnt really seem to make a difference. Were we doing something wrong You just spray the lube then wipe away with the clay bar right? Can you use a clay bar on windows? Also what can we use to bring back the shine on this car?

Yes
Should leave the car's paint smoother then it was.

..

Clay bar

Yup just make sure it stays lubed(the area you are claying) so it doesnt leave marks. If it does just go over the marks with the clar bar again. Also make sure you check your clar bar often for stuff that might scratch the car.

Can you use a clay bar on windows?
Never have tried but im not sure they will tell you on that web site

Also what can we use to bring back the shine on this car?
ZAINO!! im sure there are other stuff that you can use but ill let em post em

Thanks man. We will try it again. Hopefully we will get better results. Zaino looks nice but I cant afford to spend that much on polish and stuff. I have to pay for college and all that. Any other good brands to use?

I think Meguiars also works pretty well even tho i have never used it all that i have is the Leather Care of theres

Im not sure of what the price difference is between then and zaino but im pretty sure it isnt much

And from what i am told a coat of zaino should last about 6 months

i know there are other polishs out there just do a search on them or click on the show and shine section

There are alot of Zaino vs. other product threads out there to that i know if so you might wana look at those

The Clay bar should leave the paint smoth to a touch if not just keep going over it tell you do

Well, I'm in college ($11k/semester), and Zaino is the best $84 I ever spent. 3 years later, I still have my original bottles of polish! The stuff just lasts a loooooooong time.

Yeah, I have kinda been reading about Zaino and it seems that it does wonders. Maybe when I get $100 I can get me some Zaino. How long would it take for a firstimer to complete the whole Zaino process?

prob a few hours i would plan on 5 depending on how fast you move but the 1st time you ever put Zaino on you want to make sure your Prep REAL good if you want the rest of the cost you put on later to shine even better

It will take some time tho

I think my 1st time went something like this..
Wash car
Dry car..(which i might not have to have done)
Clay car
Wash car again
Dry car
Apply Z6(detialer pray)
apply 1st coat of Z-5
wait 30 mins
take z-5 off
apply Z6
apply z5 2nd coat
wait 30 mins
take z5 off
Z6
3rd coat of z5
take z5 off
finally v6..

Thats how i did it and i sure as hell hope that was right lol

Then the regular cleaning the inside of the car..

It is time consuming but its worth it

All the prep steps should be done, no matter what wax/polish you choose to use. That's where some confusion comes in, as a lot of people think it's only with Zaino that you have do this, and some think you do it everytime you use Zaino. No, do the first time prep with ANY product you use. After that, you only clay when needed.

Don't forget, wash with Dawn first to spotlessly clean the car and remove all residual waxes.

His directions are otherwise right on the money.

Wash with Dawn
Rinse
Wash with Z7 + claybar
Rinse
Wash with Z7
Rinse
Dry
Polishes as he said.

Heck yeah clay bars work, I am a staunch advocate for clay bars. Take a look at my cardomain page in my sig. On page 4 are pictures from right after I used a clay. When I bought my Camaro used, the paint had a very rough texture. After the clay bar, it is super smooth. My wife will even tell you that I run my fingers across the paint every day I come home from work. That's how much of a difference it makes.

ehh i saw little difference in my 95 polo green...which has never been clayed before in her life..but then again i have defective paint which sucks, but in the parts where my paint is good, yes it leaves it feeling smooth, but looking at it, there was little difference, i dont care if it "feels" smooth, i dont want it to feel smooth because i dont want people touching my car...i guess its not such a bad thing if youve got about 30-45 mins to spare...i want to try it again and then put a good coat of wax on...

Clay bar are great for white cars where those specs accumulate under the molding and on the rear bumper. Nothin cleans like clay, but it does leave minor scratches from the contaminants picked up. It is safe to clay windows as well, but steel wool works better.....keep it wet!!
