Carnuba or Synthetic

I have always used Carnuba Wax. Meguiars #26 to be exact. I was in the auto store the other night for some more, but now they only cary the NXT products by Meguiars. Which is better, Carnuba or Synthetic?

Re: Carnuba or Synthetic

A good synthetic will outlast a good carnauba wax.

Re: Carnuba or Synthetic

For many people, it's just a personal preference. With a properly prepped surface, there's usually very little difference visually.

I've found NXT to have pretty poor durability, despite Meguiar's calling it their longest lasting product. I'd be surprised if #26 didn't last just as long.

I much prefer the synthetics and also use Zaino. I want the best durability and protection I can get, along with the great shine.

Re: Carnuba or Synthetic

Correct me if i am wrong, I thought Zaino was a sealant? Is that the same thing as a wax?

Zaino is not a wax or polish. It is not exactly a sealant, but it acts like one. It also acts like a wax in that it will give your paint a good glossy look. It will last for months.

i like to use p21s - it is a carnuba wax that can be bought at a harley shop for i believe $15. AWESOME. compares with pinnacle souveran < which costs $60.

I'd call it more of a paint protectant. Not that it will stop rocks from chipping the paint or anything like that, but it has excellent protectant qualities against all the environmental stuff you're likely to run up against.

You either have to buy from a Zaino dealer or from Sal Zaino. You don't have to buy a whole kit. For a very basic beginning, get Z2 and Z7. You only have to use a very small amount of Z2. It seems like most people want to use to much when they first start using it.

Zaino is a sealant...same thing as a "synthetic."

You can buy it from the website (individually or in the kit), or you can find a local/regional distributor.

Re: Carnuba or Synthetic

It depends on what your priorities are. If it is all out finish quality, then IMO a high quality carnauba will dominate. If you are looking for, on average, long lasting results, then you could try synthetics. I have seen good durability out of a few good carnaubas, however (collinite and p21s come to mind).

Your best bet, in any case, will be to experiment with examples of proven LSPs, to see for yourself which product will serve you and your paint finish the best.

PS: You MUST properly prep the paint surface, meaning a good cleaning followed by several stages of polishing. You can determine whether you will need mild or fairly aggressive (but always clearcoat safe) polishes to prepare the paint to a streak free luster before finishing with an lsp. I highly recommend that you spend some time at www.autopia.org to get more insight on various products and techniques that you can get started with. IMO your best bet will be to keep your methods simple and straightforward.

Re: Carnuba or Synthetic

the paint is good. I know how to take care of it and prep it. I went to Pepboys to get some wax...and they were out of my usual Meguiars #26, so i got the NXT.

I have already washed thoroughly, clay bar, 3 step polish, and now ready for wax. I was just curious as to which wax was better.
