Can a newbie repaint a car and get good results?

As the title says, I've never painted a car before. I have access to a shop, hefty compressor and paint booth for free, so I'm considering doing my own paint job. Is it possible for me to get good results on my first attempt? I'm looking at going with a deep and dark purple (yea, I know, great colour to start off with eh?).

I don't want a cheap 1000 dollar paint job that won't last a few years. So either I'm doing it myself or I'll be paying a few grand to get someone to do it right.

well if you've never done one before, then you will probably end up with that $1000 paint job you don't want.

I'd say get some practice on refrigerator cartons or something before trying a car.

Short answer: No... Arf!
There's a lot of prep work involved in getting the car ready for paint, never mind the paint process itself... But, you can do some of these things yourself to minimize your costs. Find a painter that will work with you, there are folks out there that were in the same boat, as you are, one time or another. Also, there are guys just starting out painting, schools and community colleges... you get the idea. Look around and you will find we aren't the only car crazy guys, it's a gene most guys have.
