Body work experts inside please!! Need your wisdom
I currently have a tear in my front bumper due to some foreign lady backing out of her driveway. I want to fix this myself over the winter but have no idea what stuff to use to fix it. The tear is just below the passenger side amber turn signal and runs right up to the plastic lens. (She broke that too but I replaced it) Now what type of bondo or product can I use to fix the tear and will be strong enough to hold it? I'm not exactly sure what plastic the bumper is made of either. I also plan on taking the front clip off do do this so I can get behind the tear and also to repaint the whole bumper. What is the process for doing this?? I will try to do all the prep work myself probably have a body shop paint it. Also, would I need to blend my paint with the rest of the car.. it's polo green metallic.
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!
I'm certainly no expert, but when I had a similar tear in my 95 Z28's bumper, my body guy (who I've known for 15 years) told me that it's not a matter of if but when it would re-tear itself. I just replaced the bumper.
it can be "fixed" per say...but remember....the front bumper is made out of plastic. Bondo is not usually advised for these situations. Especially large amounts of bondo.
Your options are to either use a little bit of bondo if the tear is not to big. This will patch and hold it together then obviously the sanding/priming/sanding/painting after that. YOU MUST REMEMBER. This would now be a very weak spot on ur car...just the slightest bump or pressure would make this area crack again.
If its small....patch it up...if its larger...then you should get an aftermarket bumper cover for $180.

Hmmm. The tear is about 4 inches long. Is there any way to melt the plastic to bond it back together? If not, wear do you recomend getting a new bumper from?? I've heard horror stories of the bumpers sagging or not fitting right at all. Thanks for the replies and your guys' help.
You can fix it. When I got my car there was two wholes in the front next to the nose emblem. The one was as big as a nichle and the other was a crack. When I fixed mine I didnt take the bumper off. I used a 2 part compound like epoxy, called fussior. When it comes out of the tube it heats up and fuses to the plastic. Then you sand it prime it sand it tape it off and plastic the whole car and paint it. thats a quick run down on what I did and I would recomend it for any hole or crack in the bumpers.
unless you or a friend has a spray gun the car is not going to look that good. If you need to ask how to fix this I am assuming that you wont do the best job, especially if your using a spray can. But you want to try for the practice and the fun of it pick up a bodyshop book or research online. There is lots you need to know before you could perform a somewhat decent job. After that if your satisfied with how it looks throw it back on there, or take it to a shop with a good clean booth.
Well, I just plan on trying to fix the bumer and do all the prep work. I am a very particular and detailed person, so I feel confident doing all the prepwork, which I know requires the most time. I have no clue how to paint, nor am I going to spray it out of a can. I was going to take the bumper to a shop for paint, if everything turned out ok.
