I got into a minor accident only involving myself not to long ago and have some black scuff marks on the back of the bumper by the exhaust tip. Someone told me to use WD40 and I did but it only removed them partically. Help?? What do I use?

 

Have you tried using a clay bar on the marks?

A light rubbing compound such as 3M #39002 should restore it perfectly, unless the marks are too deep which would require repair first. If you can catch a fingernail over the marks, no polish will completely remove them.

Try using paint thinner and if that takes it off go over it with some polish.The thinner might dull it a little bit.But will be fine after you polish it.

I have not tried anything but WD40 and that did not do much good. Where would I get that 3m or clay bar stuff. I really don't think paint thinner would be a good idea because I think it would screw with the paint and that is something I am not willing to do. Thanks for the help!

You can get the 3M at NAPA parts stores or from www.3m.com. I really don't think clay would do much good as clay will not remove scratches. Clay only removes contaminants, paint overspray, bugs/sap, that sort of thing...

 

Chic, check Autozone, Pepboys, etc., for the claybar. Mother's and Clay Magic are probably the best off the shelf products. DO NOT buy the Meguiar's clay as it is terrible. These stores will probably have the 3M stuff as well.

 

Just FYI,
Automotive lacquer thinner or basecoat reducer will not harm a fully cured basecoat/clearcoat finish (what we have on our cars),as long as you use it sparingly on a rag...I've done this many times(50+) to remove marks exactly like the scuffs described above.

I wouldn't tell to try somthing that i wouldn't do on my car.This is a evey day for me using paint thinner to get scuff marks off.I work at a body shop.Just use a little a rag don't soak it and few wipes it sould be gone.And need to wipe real hard.

OK guys the paint thinner did not work on my black marks for one reason or another, but I did just as told and only a very small amount came off. I will try the clay bar next I guess as a last resort.
