Anyone use high speed buffer/polisher?

I just finnished painting my girl friends 90' Formula and I have yet to color sand and buff the car. I have a high speed buffer with 3M foam pads. My question is, do I use the buffer with the whole pad flush with the paint or do I use it at an angle where only one side is touching? I am a little confused on that part. Thanks.
