FS: 390hp LT1-powered 1991 RS

Life throws some curve *****. I'm starting my first "real" job soon and need to find a more respectable daily driver now that I'm in management and I've decided to sell the RS.

This car has been a labor of love for me since I first bought it in 1997 with 45k miles. It now has 77 on the chassis and 3k on all of the mods except the K&Ns.

This is a red 1991 RS with black interior, T-tops with brand new weather stripping (I wrote the tech article on Thirdgen.org), pwr locks, pwr windows, pwr hatch release and pulldown and split folding rear seats. For appearance, I have added a 1992 Z28 grille insert with bowtie and 1992 Z28 16"x8" rims.

Now for the GOOD STUFF!
Mods:
Fully functioning factory-stock-appearing LT1 conversion!!!

(Before I go further, I should mention that EVERY part of this swap is a brand new GM part other than the motor mounts that I reused. So the alternator, starter, etc all are less than 2 years old and have 3k miles on them or less.)

Engine: Bottom End

FORGED 355 BLOWER MOTOR
Childs & Albert "Trackmaster" 4340 forged 5.7" rods
TRW 21cc dished forged (4340) blower pistons +.030"
GM forged 1055 3.48" 1-piece rear main seal
Milodon 4-bolt main
Melling high-volume oil pump
plasma-moly rings
King Alecular bearings
ARP bolts/studs throughout
Fel-Pro head gaskets
rotating assembly weight-matched and computer balanced

Engine: Heads, intake and valvetrain components

GTP Stage 2 LT1 heads with full street port/polish and bowl work flow rated to 280cfm @ .550" lift.
Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.6 non self-aligning roller rockers and guide plates
Comp Cams dual valve springs good to .600" lift
Comp Cams single-piece .080" NASCAR quality thick-walled chrome-moly pushrods
Comp Cams 'R hydraulic lifters (best lifters available and currently on indefinite backorder because of overseas manufacturer)
AFR Hydra-Rev kit
Camshaft: produced by Competition Cams and grinded to Combination Motorsports' own specifications for an emissions-legal blower cam
Part # TS-224XL (224/236 .536/.555 115)
LT1 intake runners cleaned and gasket-matched to GTP heads
Plenum opening to TB ported to accept a 58mm Throttle Body

Tuning: PCMforless tuned by Brian

Rest of the car:

1995 LT1 block, wiring and PCM.
Custom wiring harness
Custom PCM mount inside car in stock 3rd gen position behind dash
PCM port for programming and reading codes
Replaced 110mph dash with 145mph IROC gauge cluster out of a 1990 Iroc-Z

B&M 28,000 gvw SuperCooler tranny cooler
160 degree TPIS thermostat
Custom LT1 coolant routing
CSI electric water pump
LT4 hi torque starter with remote solenoid

8.8mm wires
NGK TR55 plugs
LT4 Valve Covers
Corvette LT4 fuel rail covers with MBA bowtie symbols
Braided Steel fuel lines and -AN fitting adapters for LT1 fuel rail
Granatelli MAF with MBA blue anodized aluminum end pieces
Walbro 255lph in-tank fuel pump
SVO 36# flow-matched injectors
TPIS adjustable fuel pressure regulator
95+ vented opti-spark (brand new)
SLP 1 3/4" headers and 3" y-pipe
Dynomax muffler
Dynomax intermediate pipe
Custom factory-appearing turndown style exhaust tips (for the sleeper look)
Catco 3" high-flow cat
Strange 3.73 ring & pinion
Summit rear end girdle.
Zexel-Torsen limited-slip differential
Koni Yellow "Street Sport" adjustable shocks/struts
Car cover
Alpine head unit
Alpine speakers
Alpine 12 disc cd changer

...and a subtle LT1 badge off a Corvette on the passenger dash.

I'm sure I've forgotten at least a dozen other little things I've done!

The interior is immaculate for any 3rd gen. The body is perfect. The paint is great for a car with 77k miles with a few rock chips and and the requisite scrapes to the lower front fascia. The engine was designed to work with 12psi of boost on the street running pump gas. With a low CR of 9.2:1 and the current mild cam, it should be putting 340 to the wheels or about 390-400 at the flywheel. I don't have any dyno runs to back that up, but it is a proven combo and the fellows at Combination Motorsports can vouch for their cam's numbers.

The engine PARTS alone totaled $7500.

If you're looking for a sleeper, a weekend warrior, or a car built with no expense spared..... this RS is a serious contender.

I'm asking $9,500 firm for the car.

Hey Brett. It has been a long time. I am sorry to hear you will have to sell it.

Is Chae still making those harnesses?

9500 is a steal! I would buy that car if I didn't have mine already. I can't believe noone has jumped on it.

You have got to be putting more power than that out with the flow on those heads.

Anyway, take care and hope you get what you want out of it.

Later, Mike.

Damn! That's one cool 3rd gen. I just bought my 01 and love it but I love the 3rd gen look. I used to have a 89 rs with the 2.ohmygodthisthingisslow and I still loved it. I would have been all over that early november. Oh well, bump ttt for you.

Thanks for the replies.

Mike, I tossed the 390 out there as a conservative number. I haven't dyno'd the car and it DOES run a lower CR at 9.2:1, so 390 fwhp seemed safe. The original cam was making 405 rwhp! So far I'm getting a lot of scattered interest.... e-mails, PMs, IMs from guys curious about it. I have two guys coming to look at it next weekend when I'm home, so it's actually moving along semi-quick. This week I'll be putting a new set of tires on it, changing the fluids, and checking for anything that needs attention after the long winter sleep.

One thing of note to anyone who might be interested.... I recently changed out the cam and finally went to a blower-friendly grind. According to Combination Motorsports and PCMforless this cam will pass emissions AND make wild power with a blower. With the forged internals and all other bolt-ons, this engine just needs the blower!!

With my car needs changing, I'm not happy to sell it, but am also looking forward to something new to play with maybe next year.

Oh, btw... I no longer know how to contact Chae. Last I spoke to him, his shop had been burglarized and he was looking into moving it someplace new. I guess he finally did that. And I lost the sheet with his home phone number.

BUT WAIT!!! The wonders of Google never cease to amaze...

Awesome! I think I'll give him a call and catch up on how he's been. That guy helped me out a LOT, and I've been passing on the same favor to other LT1 swappers since then.
