flex plate?

Hey guys,

I was at the machine shop today with my shortblock. We decided on some pistons so they are ready to start the machining. They are gonna balance the rotating assembly for me after all the machining is done. They said they need the harmonic dampner and the flex plate. Couple questions, since this motor is out of a 96 impala SS.

1. Is the flex plate the flywheel? and if so will the one out of the impala work on my car (97 M6)?

2. Is the harmonic balancer which i know is the accessory drive pulley the same as on the camaro?

Thanks guys
Steve

Re: flex plate?

Hi Steve

A flex plate is used with an automatic tranny. The flex plate is used to bolt the torque converter to the motor. If you have a (m6) six speed you will need to take the fly wheel and the clutch to the machine shop.

I am not sure if the harmonic balancers are the same. I believe they are.
My understanding of the difference of the impalla LT1 and the f-body LT1 was just the heads. The impala had iron heads. Otheers that hav emore knowledge should be able to correct me if I am wrong.
