Sticky 255's

After my upgrades last year (headers, 1.6RR, 3.42s, etc) I no longer have traction in first gear at all. I have Khumo ECSTA Supra 712 tires on there now (255/50/16) and I know they aren't great for straight line traction. I always wanted to get my car to the point where it could light up the tires at ~50km/h or faster, but now that I am here I am finding that more traction would be nice... lol. I don't want to switch rims, so I am just looking for suggestions for a really sticky tire that will fit on my stock 16x8 rims. Are Nitto or BFG drag radials the way to go? I am not a corner carver, so I don't mind giving up some handling to get some traction.

Thanks

I'm running Micheline Pilots and I love them! I had BFG b4 and these Pilots are 10 times better.

Thats just my opinion though...

For daily driving, the Nittos are the only way to go...
The BFG's are great, but with their wear characteristics, you would be replacing them way to often if you drive much.

I've got Yokohama's AO32R's on my ride.
I don't have enough power to smoke them when they are already warm - they haze for a split second and then hook like a bassturd. Even with a 4000 rpm sidestep clutch drop they won't spin.

I love the look of them.

The only disadvantage is they make a wirring noise at high speed.
With the T-Tops off and the radio on I can't hear it though........

Nittos are great for daily traction....not so good in the rain on the highway, and tend to wear out fast. Get ready to get a lot of debris in the tires too (you'll be at the tire store getting them plugged a lot)

Throw the 2.73 back in there and get a stall instead. Problem solved.

4000 RPM and no spin? You sure that whirring sound isn't your tranny? Ouch.

Gord, I have a stall waiting to go in... Vigilante 2800. I am going to keep the 3.42s... 2nd gear pulls much better now. I can't tell in 1st because I can't hook up... lol. Oh yeah, it wasn't just the gears that killed the traction. The headers, !cat, and 1.6 RR did a number on my traction too.

I had Firehawks before, and they were a great tire. They are a lot of money though, and I am hoping I can get better straight line traction from something else. Yokohama AO32R's seem to get a lot of praise, but a lot of reviews complain about how fast they wear down.

Iroc383, which BFG's did you have before the Pilots?

I think I am going to go with a drag radial, either BFG or Nitto. Did you have to warm them up before you got better traction on the street, or did they always just seem to be stickier. JD, did you ever run your BFG's on the street, or track only? If Nitto's are better for daily driving, then that is probably what I will go with... assuming the traction is very similar to or better than the BFGs. I am driving my car everyday right now, and will continue to do that through the summer. Hopefully I get my act in gear and take the car off the road next winter.

Sorry for all the questions. It is just that there are a lot more people who have gone through similar experiences on this board than on the VIFBODY board.

Thanks guys.

PS... where would you go in Vancouver to get Nitto DRs?

Be the first on your block to drive a set...

You might wanna hold out for a month or so until the new MT drag radials come out. From everything I hear they are suppose to be the ****.

I think once I wear out my BFG's...and by the way I like the BFG's over the Nitto's...I will get a pair of the MT's.
