LSD install advise

i have an SLP takeoff LSD unit for my open diff.

i am not changing the gears, 3.23's, and have heard that the LSD install is pretty straight forward, however my friend who is helping (who is an aircraft mechanic, and is great with cars too), is concerned about the ring/pinion, as he doesn't want to harm them when we re-install the ring (that has to be taken out with the spider, and put on the LSD unit)... what's your opinion, will it just fit back on ok, or does it need to be done professionally...

thanks
ian

edit: on the side, if i did the gears (which probably wont happen), can local mechanics do a speedo recallibration, or is this a HPP3 thing...

it definately needs to be done professionally ..

while ur at it u should put some 3.73s in there

ur basically doing a ring and pinion job .. the pinion depth and backlash and all the other crap needs to be DONE RIGHT (IE: NOT AT HOME) or else ur rear end will howl itself to death

i would do the 3.73's if a local shop can do a speedo recalibration... or i might swap the whole rear end....

but you'd say just doing the LSD myself is a bad idea.... here's a link to some guy who did it himself... http://www.fastblackcar.com/camaro/lsd.htm
thats where i got the idea of doing it myself would be fine (also many others on camarov6.com say they've done it themselves with no beef)

that guy's name is Jordon Musser .. he also rebuilts T56 trannies himself .. and designs and fabs up turbo kits and rebuilds engines ..

if u do all the above .. sure go ahead and do ur own gears too

although .. on second thought ... since ur not pulling the pinion gear .. u should be fine

i've done this a few times .. and no its not really a big deal UNLESS ur pulling out the pinion gear

so yeah on second thought id so go ahead... just keep all ur shims and spacers in order .. u should be fine

so you saying that it'd be ok for me to do the LSD swap at home, with my buddy...doing things according to the above website

and what do you mean when you say keep your shims in order...

yes u'll be fine

when u pull the open diff carrier .. there will be a bunch of shims and spacers on each side to centre the ring gear on the pinion ... make sure they dont fall or get mixed up .. zap strap them all and put EVERYTHING IN just like it came out

if ur "LSD" didnt come with bearings .. u'll need new bearings

other than that .. pay extra attention to how u took sh*t apart .. and put sh*t back in in the same order .. u'll be fine

now heres an idea for u instead of putting LSD on a car that cant even do a proper burnout . u should buy my motor, slap some heads on it and REALLY make use of that LSD

Bahh, Payam, shame on you... trannies are simpler than you think. My tranny still works after I tore it apart!

Just be careful and TAKE YOUR TIME and measure all the shims for spacing and you'll be fine. This isn't something I'd try when I know I needed the car the next day, y'know? Maybe allow a couple of days to get new shims in if you have to order... or if you snap bolts off in the housing, whatever...
