Isn't there an electrical junction of some sorts you could access to knock out the power grid for his home? No hotwater, no power, no heat = one pain in the a$$ for him.

I honestly would beat the living $hit out of him, but that's just me .

Good luck.

Geez... that really sucks.
Doesn't he owe you more than 120 since he only paid for 50% of the materials up front? Still have the receipt for the materials? Did he pay you cash or with a cheque? Might be able to get some of that back in court then.

Other than that... make him pay... bad. Was this a friend of a friend?

well if you take him to court or if you phone the inspector then they will know you did the work or he will tell them you did the work. you did the work with no permit and for cash, so doens't that screw you around with your electrical ticket and stuff.

i thought it did but i dunno.

when i/we do cash jobs we usually got for 25-30 bucks an hour depending on they people. like if they look like they have a lot of money they get charged 30 if not then 25. i always prefer to charge 30 though but i don't make that decsission. i just show up with them and do the work and get paid. btw im a 3rd year apprentice.

Your rates are inline IMO. We contract out to electrician for some of our work and usually pay around $25-40 depending on the quality of the worker. $30 is Damn reasonable.

Glad you at least were smart enough to get some up front. Most people don't, then get screwed even worse.

Did this guy get referred to you by a past client or friend? If so, give the person a call and ask them what the deal is with this guy. Does he do this to everyone? Is he that much of an a-hole? Maybe they can put pressure on him by telling him how much of a jerk he is.

I take it you didn't give him a quote on paper eh? Probably not... else you'll run into the GST police.

I happen to know the electrical inspector in Chilliwack - not well but I still do.
I would go talk to him face to face and confess as to doing a job without a permit. Action would be taken against me in the form of a warning letter stating that the next time there will be a hefty fine.
It would still get him in more crap than me - due to having his walls torn out.........

He payed me with a cheque........and he took the paperwork for the material.

The way I see it, ur laughing. Why? Because, one he paid with a cheque not cash. That's traceable. Therefore all you have to say is that he put down a retainer fee for the work. This as u probably know is a common practice. Then when you presented him with the finall invoice he said forget it. and wouldn't pay you. You do not have too admit it was cash and if he argues otherwise you say he is trying to be an even bigger jerk so that u'll get in trouble. With the permit, I don't know the exact rules but I believe that the owner has to aply for it. Just say that he said he got one and when u asked for it he said it was in the car or something and he would grab it later. You were working iunder the impression that he had one. Then take him to court.get an invoice ready, present it to him one last time and if he refuses, then take him to court. As for the materials u can say that he owes u because you bought them since u can get it cheaper and he was supposed to pay for them at cost. That could have been part of ur deal.
