Hey West coast

keep it under 4 for at least a 1000 km's is hte basic one.. the most advanced one is you work your way up over 5000km's

also don't hold a constant speed. vary it.. around town driving is perfect for breaking in the engine actually.

For first startup, run it at ~2500 rpm for 30 minutes, then do an oil change.

Set ignition and timing

Drive at various rpms for the first 50 kilometers

do 5-6 medium throttle accelerations to 5000rpm and let off the gas coasting back down to 30km/h

do a couple of hard throttle accelerations to 5krpm, let off the gas and coast to 30km/h

Change the oil and filter

Drive 750 kilometers normally up to around 5000rpm. No hard driving.

Change the oil and filter.

Drive the s.hit out of it

Oil Changes

Confused a bit about oil changes, my mechanic never suggested doing an oil change, nor did he suggest against it tho. Whats the reason for the oil change right after? Ive done about 400 km since its been rebuilt driving very very easy at first, and then varying the throttle up to around 4000. only once did i go above 4k (couldnt help myself). So how important is that oil change? Thanks for the tips btw

erik seems its best to do it right away but i did like 3thousand km's before doing it.. then when you do change the oil i went to synthetic for my own reasons. my engine is strong... so i can't be that bad!

I do recommend an oil change after cam break-in. Breaking in the cam you get some metal on metal contact which makes metal dust in your oil. As well your oil gets pretty stressed when working like that. I dont think its required after your freeway drive. I change after about 1000km then go into the regular routine (every 3000-5000KM) Do NOT use synthetic until you get about 5000km on your engine as you need some time to get everything worn in.

You just had your engine rebuilt to stock specs? or did you make some adjustments ?

I had to get it rebuilt to stock specs, if it had crapped out just 2 or 3 months later i would have had enough to cam it and do all the fun stuff. Im majorly bummed bout it all =/ Livin on your own while going to school aint easy

On the bright side i spent 12.5 hours at my mechanics straight (overnight) helping him put it in, i shaved 200$ off an already cheap $500 install job... Learnt how to set my rockers etc...

I'll probably do a regular oil change then this weekend.... cheap and easy maintenance i suppose.. my fing mech used some fram filter tho .. grr!

I'm curious as to why you have to wait for 5000k's before adding synthetic? Cory, my 02 hawk came with synthetic right from the factory.

I was under the impression that every new engine is already tested and broken in before being put into a new car. Therefore your motor probably had more then 5000 kms worth of breakin so synthetic oil was OK.

Synthetic lubricates too well for break in. On break in you want some friction so that things seal and/or wear in to each other correctly. IE piston rings and cam shafts. Kind of like how you use a grinding compund to seal valves.
