I'd also be curious to see how the gear ratios on the truck compare to the Camaro. Perhaps while you had to go to the tallest gear he could leave it in the 2nd tallest, etc. He'd get a nice torque advantage on you that way.

Wow!
Talk about kickin a guy while he's down!
I was cruising at 110km/h in sixth - and you guys think I should have gone down to third?
That would make for about about 1 second of third gear and then I would have to shift into 4th before I hit the rev limiter.....
I'm not hot on rev matching......I'd just as soon not attempt it and be safe than screw it up and mess something expensive up for good.
Really though........would it have helped me that much? We raced quite a ways into 6th gear, so there was plenty of time to make up.
I did win the race......he was behind me.

Re: Had a fun little highway race.......
Yes you should of been in 3rd. 110km/h is the start of 3rd gear when racing. You should keep it in 3rd until around 155km/h. According to your shift points you'd be shifting at 4000rpm but that is when the LT1's come alive. 4000rpm is where peak torque is so that's where you want to start off at, not end at. No wonder he was able to stay with you. You'd kill him if you shifted at the right time. And yes it makes a big difference. There is no reason for you to be in 6th gear in a race. You can peg the speedo in 5th gear. 5500-5600 rpm is a safe point to shift at with no worries of over-reving.
Not trying to kick you while your down.
But if you let another ford truck get close to you again then maybe I will

Re: Had a fun little highway race.......
what they said ,
come out with us this year its awsome !! By the end of last year we were getting fast as hell , after last year I learned to drop it straight into first at 60K or under then chop second, third oh baby !!! People that pick a fight from a roll are like wtf just happened
A silver BMW M3 ( new style ) picked a fight coming home from Java Hut . . . . i was in 5th or 6th cruising at aprox 100km and he screams up along side and hammers the brakes. ( keep in mind the car is quiet at this rpm ) I counted off three honks and went straight into second gear as soon as his hood jumped . . . I betcha it sounded like the gates of hell opened up on his *** . . . poor bastard

Re: Had a fun little highway race.......
Panda, just think of it as constructive criticism.
I'd expect the same.
Being an A4, I've never been very keen on rolling start races, but you take what you can get. I think the converter and heads should help a tad now. I'll have to try some rolling start races against some cars.

Re: Had a fun little highway race.......
and with second gear drops you will beat cars you shouldnt beat. only because most people are in the wrong gear or dont know how to race/when to shift.
Re: Had a fun little highway race.......
I consider this all good information and a valuable talk.
Thanks guys!
Next time I won't almost let a stupid truck keep up.
I need to know more about rev matching.......

Re: Had a fun little highway race.......
all you gotta do is bring your revs up before letting the clutch engage. so basically you press the clutch pedal, drop into your desired gear, bring the revs up on your motor, then lift your foot off the clutch while continuing to press the gas.

Sounds like driver error on Monkey's part.
Get an automatic and a Vigi 3600 and you'll be laughing. Highway driving is where the 2.73's shine. At 110km, you're gonna drop into 2nd gear at around 4000 RPM. Perrrrrrfect.

This monkey was ahead every step of the way

Meh.......auto's are boring to me - my Blazer is the first one I've ever had, if they had made it in a stick I would have bought that........but no....:blah:
