Unhappy driver and copilot died at SCCA Rally this weekend in Oregon

My coworker was a volenteer at the SCCA Rally this weekend, and the first car out on the track, driven by the a very skilled National driver and his copilot, slammed into a tree at 100 mph on the first major turn... Don't know what was the reason....

I have a friend that was down there as crew for one of the teams. I'll see if he can get us some details.

Really bad timing though. SCCA Rally suspended their racing just a few months ago for the same reason. 2 guys on the East Coast died when a WRX lost control on a straight-away (wasn't a corner section which I'd assume is more common) and killed them (as spectators). I don't remember if the driver/copilot were injured in that one, just that spectators were hit and fatalities were involved. Here's the details: http://www.nyjournalnews.com/newsroo...llydeaths.html

Sounds like SCCA Rally needs some serious review of race-course standards... which led to their suspension notice for all non-pro ralley events:

Guess they should have extended the suspension to the whole Ralley circuit. I love 4x4'ing as much as the next guy, but at these speeds I think fatalities are more of WHEN than IF.
