Classic musclecar dyno #'s?
Classic musclecar dyno #'s?
Has anyone found a web site ever showing 60-70 vintage musclecars (mostly stock at least) with real RWHP dyno numbers? Or even track times?
Let me say that I love the classic era. Man, I would own every car if I could. I'd never knock those cars.
But I've been searching for a long time, and no classic musclecar guys EVER post real rwhp numbers when they dicuss their cars. I've even visited their forums and word "dyno" never comes up (unless the car has been seriously altered). All they ever post is the gross numbers. Hence, untested and theoretical.
I've only found/seen two cars dyno, and they were mostly stock HEMIs laying down 310-315 rwhp, which are great numbers (tubular headers only i think).
I have a lot of info that my father has passed to me as he was a big drag racing nut in the late 60's and 70's, regarding track times, etc... He used to run a '66 442 W-30.
As we all know, they used gross flywheel numbers, meaning that the #'s were about 30-40% above rwhp, and it is tough to compare those cars to today's. My father saw a lot of 440-6's. 442 W-30's, 428 CJ's, etc, and rated at 350-390, most turned in 220-270 rwhp. At the time, he says a lot of guys used to chassis dyno their cars right away. Pretty much EVERYONE did.
But it is so odd why it is tough to find those numbers today. Perhaps most of them are afraid to do so, I'm thinking. They don't want the illusion to be shattered before their eyes.
I'd like to see some genuine rwhp numbers though.

A buddy's '72 442 W-30 put down 320 at the wheels and that is in line with a stock rebuild.
My '70 442 was blueprinted rebuilt (by an awesome engine builder) with stock crank, rods, iron intake, Q-Jet, iron heads, exhaust manifolds and put down 391 RWHP and 472 RWTQ through the mufflers. It's run a best of 13.29 @ 109.68 with 2.36 60' on skinny 225/70's and 3980 lbs.

4gear70: I love your car bud! The exhaust is sweet...Jerry (95wagon) did it right? If that is your car, I saw it run at Mission about a month and a half ago...you and I should line up
Let me get my slicks mounted first though
Andy
PS: Who was your engine builder?

Yeah, that would have been me at Mission about a month and a half ago along with 95wagon.
With my crappy 60' times, I'm going to need some slicks as well.
CHP just had an article on a 70 Chevelle SS454 LS5 that was completely restored and they dynoed it before the rebuild. If I remember correctly it put down 255-260 rwhp. The LS5 was rated at 390hp from the factory. They rebuilt the engine but with a little extra ummph for fun.
