Like Pa’yam said, installing a housing could be done by anyone at home. Unless you are referring to the installation of all the bracketery. That obviously has to be done by someone who knows how to weld.

I just finished building a 9 inch and the cost was relatively cheap especially when taking into consideration all the 7.5 inch gears I have spit. This was on an S-10 which has leaf springs and no torque tube. Including the welding of the perches, new 31 spline axles, new shoes and eleven inch drums, and 457 gears, it came to $1600.00.

I'll break down the cost for you guys:

-9 Inch housing with torque arm mounts and 2 new axle bearings= $725usd = $995 canadian + the $130 I had to pay for taxes when I was bringing it across the boarder. Final Cost = $1125cdn for the housing

- 9 inch centersection with Strange nodular case, Daytona Billet Pinion Suports, 4.30 gears and Detroit Locker= $1000 usd bought off Kurtis Tamez. Final cost= $1375 Canadian

- 35 spline axles = Free from Kurtis Tamez (thanks again bro!!!) *although I did have to drive to Yakima in the middle of the winter, in a 1987 Sunbird. Also...a bottle of Crown to show my grat. Total cost = $100 Canadian

- Sphon Swaybar relocation brackets = $120 usd = $165 Canadian

- Press bearings onto the axles = $80 (had new spacers made as well)

- Oil (Royal Purple) $50

Total Cost: $2895 Canadian after tax and shipping (not including the time to install it)

All in all, the sport is WAY too expensive. But the rear I have now, as long as it is assembled properly is good to well over 1000hp

I see, well this rear FS has it all for a fraction of the cost as you can see & its fully assembled, anyone can throw away money or wait & buy something for a fraction of the cost.

Lets see, my stock diff has motive 4.10 gears with new bearings, total cost for a reputable shop to do the gear swap? $800cdn with new bearings, cost my MAC gridle? $300cdn if you want to count bringing it into the border, total cost = $1100, my cost? $200, girdle cost? Free, everything I get? I only pay 7% tax on & no brokerage etc... Its all about shopping around, reason I didn't want a 9" right away is cuz I knew if I waited I could get it for $1200US which is what they go for used & you know they work, always less then 12 bolts. After I found one for $1150 a while back with everything including billet yoke & posi (harder to find then locker) with I belive 31 spline axels cuz it was posi, I said screw it cuz the cost in HP, weight, angle problems, ABS would be a mess etc... I said screw it just buy a used working 10 bolt. Thing is I find that if a 10 bolt holds for more then 2-3 month after being rebuilt it ussually lasts a long time, most of them blow up because 10 bolts if not put together 100% to spec blow up, also if you rear blew up & you're reusing the housing? Well 99% of the time a reused housing is no longer got the stregth & ussually the bores are out of round, now install everything perfrectly in there & watch her blow up countlesly, 12 bolts have strong housings & so do 9", so even when they blow up you don't run into the same problems because I belive the way the bearings mount, not sure, I'm sure 95Wagon can chime in since he knows his rears pretty good, thats up to him though.

Matt.
