Anyone an expert on web servers

Is it possible to purchase and setup your own server so its super freaking lightning fast ? It was suggested that I might consider upgrading to a stand alone server that I purchase myself or mirroring the site on dual servers if it begins to slow from traffic or just high graphic loads . . . anyone know the cost of this if it needs to be done ( equiptment and setup )

If you go to a company like http://www.in2net.com/ you can get a setup from them.

There's a couple of ways:

- You rent a box from them, they take care of the hardware, but you have full control of the server.

- You buy a rackmount server and pay to have it live at their site.

Those two options will help if you have a complicated database backend making your website load slowly. It won't help with the graphics because you'll still be limited by your ISP's pipe.

- You offload your images to a big server company like Akamai.com and let them serve all the images, leaving your server to do just the web pages.

Maybe another option is to hire someone to rework the site to make it faster.

Re: Anyone an expert on web servers

Hey

Thanks for the reply Im lost on this stuff.

Im not actualy sure if it will be slow or not yet as its still being coded Im just kinda "planing for the worst and hoping for the best" .

How much band width do you think I will need . . .that is to be safe and never have to worry about going over ? The site has some basic flash on the front page and alot of pictures throughout ( Just the basic Thumbnails for each product which expands to a full size if clicked etc )

Also how does this server package look to you ? Too much ?

Dedicated Intel Cel 2.4 GHZ Server
1020 MB DDR RAM
1500 GB of transfer a month
120 gig hard drive space
99$ a month usd

Should be fast eh ? They will handle all the monitoring and setup/ maintinence etc.

Thanks for your help .

try gravity computers @ www.gravitycomputers.com or call 872-0123 and ask for James. Tell him I sent you. He should be able to help you out as well. I don't know his pricing but I'm sure he can help.

I'm out of the loop, I have no idea what you are doing (or if you are talking publically about it), so some of this may sound stupid.

Are you going to have forums, stuff where people can sign up for accounts, blogs, etc? If so, you'll probably need a dedicated server.

How many hits/day are you expecting? 10, 100, 1k, 100k?

If you look at a page like this post, it's about 200kbytes. But only about 30k of that is text, the rest are images that get saved on your hard drive to speed up loading time.

So let's say you get people browsing about 10 posts each day, that's 300k per person. Maybe you have 100 people per day reading the page, that's 30 megs of traffic each day. Each month, that works out to 900 megs of traffic... way below your 1500GB transfer each month.

That'll be plenty fast.

That price sounds about right... especially since the USD has been dropping so much lately.

Is it Linux or Windows? You'll usually get a better deal with Linux since you don't have to pay for the OS, and it's so much cheaper for them to admin.
