Hi John. Welcome.

A 99 stock (depending if M6 or A4) will make 285-305 at the rear wheels. Most are close to 300, or a tad over, and very few in the 280's. The 98-00 f-body cars don't see as much gain from a Z06 cam (and it depends which cam - an 01 z06 cam is much milder than the 02 z06 cam) because they have both a bigger cam already (compared to 01-02 cars that have truck cams) and a smaller intake manifold, but still some. On a completely stock car, I don't know precisely, but with all the bolt ons (headers, pullies, etc...), you're looking at 350-365 rwhp (maybe 10 more on a 01-02 f-body). Roughly a 20 rwhp gain from that cam. It would be completely emission friendly. Other cams are good for 60-70 rwhp (410 rwhp...), but aren't so friendly on the AIRCARE.

Don't buy any LS1 below 2001 because there is more then just a few problems, bad piston rings, bad trannies, EGR's, etc... Trannies have something like carboard syncros

Some ls6 cam cars make good power , upwards of 30 HP over the 01 02 cars which come with the " peanutest " of all cams like chris said . Because the 01 02 cars have better intake already and the small cam there is a fair benifit to the swap but the zo6 cam makes all the extra power over 4000 rpms and has little torque improvement over the stocker . In the graphs that I have seen , you can almost trace the lines up to 4000 rpm . A better alternative if you want the sleeper cam is the new comps cam grind

COMP 212 218 558 563 115 LSA
Z06 204 218 551 547 117.5 LSA

The ( *SMALLER* )duration should help power down low a bit more as well as the shorter lobe seperation . There starting to do some neat things with ls1 cams now . Theres a guy on ls1 tech thats runninh a pretty small 220 220 Pony grind to just over 400 rwhp on stock heads .

I would have thought that increased duration and tighter LSA will decrease power down low - at least that's the way it works on LT1s due to more overlap.

holy crap, these cars make good power

before i had to sell my mustang, i spent about $3000 to $4000 on the motor and i doubt it would make over 300 rwhp...heads, cam, intake, roller rockers, headers, pulleys, h pipe, intake spacer, etc., etc. etc. ... my buddy oliver only bought a cam and headers and made 328 rwhp or soemthing on his 96 z28...

so if 98-00 ls1's are *****, and 01-02 ls1's are still like $30,000, then whats the best option? just buy a 98-00 and stay NA? thats all i would plan on anyways...im not too worried about tranny's anyways, they can always be rebuilt...i broke second gear on my t5 on the stock motor!!! lol

all ls1's are great. the things that are different in the years usually get changed anyways. only thing is that the 01-02 all ready have the ls6 intake. 98's have a different computer or something so that is probably the only year i would try to avoid, but i dunno if it is a big deal or not as i have never actually looked/researched to find out what is different in it.

with all bolt-ons i don't see why an 01-02 would make any more as the ls6 intake is a bolt on for 98-00. if anything the 98-00 would make more as they have a bigger cam than an 01-02. is that not correct?

get the HAMMER CAM

After riding in Phils car (Mikes brother) that thing is impressive for just having a ls6 intake, cam and headers. Should be interesting what it dyno's now after the intake swap..

348 RWHP with no tuning

Since then added LS6 and offroad pipes and she just flat out flies.
*** meter predicts 380 RWHP range and that aint with any tuning
car feels great and scare the crap out of you in a sec.
Hammer cam all the way

Also for the 98s beign down on power just a bunch of wifes tales

The ls6 intake was a amazing gain in power with my car and i believe solely one of the strongest contributions to the increase in power over the years. Also you still see 2002 dynoing in the low 300s sure there a couple of crazy one but not enough to verify that much of a improvement. The Ta dynoed 296 RWHP with 5000kms on the clock and no mods so si think she was plenty strong enough to start.

As for trannies being crap guys are having issue through all the years. The tremec sucks i have been lucky with mine and she is still holding strong.

Yes, Blair, you are correct. I wasn't counting the LS6 intake as a typical bolt on as so few people bother with it (until they add a cam or so).

There is really nothing wrong with a 98-00 car. Look at my wimpy automatic - putting out 319/338 with a high stall convertor. Thats 400 at the engine. And what mods do I have? A little intake and a crank pulley - that's it.

Each year has its differences, but if you are going to modify the car seriously, then the differences don't mean much, IMO. The 98-99 have poorer manifolds than 00-02 cars, but just do headers. The 98-00 may have a better cam, but you'll likely swap that out too (so it doesn't hurt getting the 01-02 car). All the years have piston slap of some form, but its nothing to worry about - nothing like the old sixties cars. The 01-02 cars got an upgraded oil pump (there have been some - read very few - oil pump failures in 98-00 cars), but if you are reallt concerned about that, upgrade it with a ported unit from ARE when you do your cam.

Most of the differences are only apparent if you are stock or nearly stock - once you mod seriously, all cars make good power in the LS1. Only a few are lemons .

You can expect a 6-spd with all the boltons (headers, pullies, intake, exhaust, but no cam or heads) to dyno 335 -360, and an A4 to dyno 325-345 - factory tolerances are the difference. That will get you easily in the 12s. And with an A4 with a higher stall TC (like mine), all the bolt ons means low 12's high 11's, depending on how big the TC is.

In the end, buy what you can afford, keep some money left over for mods, and pick the car that you can get the best deal on (and that hasn't been beat on).

Good luck.

Mike, that car was craving for those two items. Screw those cats and let it breath. Got to be worth 25 rwhp at least IMO. Throw in the tune for another 10+. Yeah baby!
