4th Xp Crash in 3 weeks
Anybody else running Xp ?
It just crashed again yesterday for the fourth time in 3 weeks . In total its had over 12 fatal crashes requireing complete reformat in seven months . These last four or five were corrupted or missing oxc 0000006 , ox7e and hive files as well as \systemroot\system32\config\software is corrupt or absent . I think ive tracked the oxc and ox7e files down to outlook express taking a crap . Now im looking for a better email thats not hotmail to see if that fixes the glitches .
Anybody have similar Xp crashes and figure out whats not getting along in there ?? Everything has been kept up to date and the crashes are always when Ive been away from the pc and come back .
It has Mcafee anti virus software kept 100% up to date too except this last time because I wanted to see if that was the problem and didnt install it . It auto updates so I figured it might auto update itself into a comma but thats not the prob because it just did it again
Xp is the best and the worst operating system I have ever used . I love the kewl music they give me everytime I have to reformat the ****ing system software
Dodod cha cha do do cha cha

I run XP Pro on my home computers and have not seen that problem before...I even upgraded the comp I got off you to XP. A good thing to do would be to partition your drive this next time you set it up and keep the Operating system on one partition and load all your programs and save all your files to the other. Also run XP Pro on 72 machines here in the office and have not had any similiar problems with those either. What are your hardware specs?
almost sounds like you have some kind of worm or virus that messed up your Xp/Outlook..
remember when your reformat and reinstalle verything, to immediatly goto windowsu pdate and get the latest patches on everything, the very first thing you do when your back on the internet.

If you are losing email that you have downloaded, tell Outlook Express to keep a copy of the email on the server for a day or two. That way if you lose it, you can still download it within the next day (or whatever you set it to). If you download the email from another machine that does not have OE configured to keep a copy on the server, the mail will be removed from the server when you download it.
Doesn't help with the crashing problem, but it may help you get access to your email.

I haven't lost email, but I've also had to reformat three times in the last 2 months.
The last time was because my wife thought she could surf while I was downloading a critical update. Now I have to do it again....

Im running XP Home and have had very little problems. I think its an awesome OS. Twitch, I dont think your having an XP problem. Maybe a bad hard drive or ram. Nobody has mentioned this either.......maybe your overheating.
I have found the main reason XP will crash is over heating of a component. usually through over clocking or incorrect BIOS settings.
We have one system that has not crashed since we got our release version from team XP

Twich, if you're looking for a decent email client use Mozilla Thunderbird 0.4. You can get it at www.Mozilla.org
If you partition your machine, as Johnny suggested, you can switch the email save directory to something other than your C drive.
No point in me speculating in why it's crashing. But I'll comment on the ones listed already.
Usually, overheats won't cause data loss, unless it's mid-write... and even then it should just kill what it's writing at that moment in time, not static DLL's. Same goes for Ram, usually won't cause data loss, esp since it can't affect what's written on the disk. A bad hard drive is a possibility, but usually they cause bad sectors when they go bad. Do a chkdsk and see if you have any once you get it back up. Virii of course can do it, but since you're (usually) up to date that's probably not the problem either.
One thing you can easily check is your power supply. Make sure you're getting the correct voltage to all the connectors... that could cause mucho problems.
Personally, I don't like XP. I run Win2k at home and in my office. We have SOO many problems at my work with WinXP machines. From software we write acting slightly differently under Win2k, to machines (Dell Laptops with XP in particular) spontaneously dying.
We've got close to 700 machines, it's probably about 75% 2k, 20% XP, 5% other (95-98 for some test machines since we've got some customers on them, some Pocket PC (or Win CE) devices, a few Linux boxes, 20 mid-sized dedicated AIX/HP/Solaris servers and 2 multi-million dollar HP boxes with 80 CPU's each and Air conditioners dedicated to them).
Anyhow, way off topic.

Thanks for all the help guys
Ill try the Mozilla . I think its outlook because I did a search for oxc 0000006 missing or currupt and came up with a few writeups of the exact same crash were they said to remove and re-install outlook as a fix . Every time I have the problem its when Im accesing email or outlook is running , this last time it wouldnt open the favorites folder and then the whole system crashed very shortly after . Atleast if I uninstall and try this new thing I can rule it out as the problem .
It may be a hardware or ram problem I suppose . I had the laptop sent in for a new burner and rear adsl plug and had them look into the crashing problem . They had listed a new motherboard on the receipt when I got it back but who knows .
I keep it up to date with the hot fixes from windows but it doesnt seem to help . Its not a virus because I went as far as to run stinger in the limp mode on the system and it came up clean . I kind of though something was getting through too .
The other **** off is repair doesnt fix the problem files , only complete distructive reformat EVERY time . Windows is too stupid to discover the problem . I dont know if thats any sort of clue as to where the problem is coming from . You would think it would keep better track of its system files .
The over heat thing could be a possibility . Its a laptop and its always left on , always . I never shut any of my computers off and never had a problem . Its a Hp pavilion 1900 mhz if it helps .
What are incorrect bios settings ? I maybe should check that out as I have no idea how incorrect or correct those are
Can I partition a windows Xp hard drive ? If so how . . . that sounds like a good plan
Nate , I saved em to cd haha !!
Thanks again for the help

Number 5 yesterday . Has to be outlook express , I downloaded thunderbird to disc but kept using outlook on the pc with just a basic number of programs installed .
I closed all windows and unplugged the adsl from the back of the pc when I was away to rule out those problems .
I didnt install any periferals or software for stuff like my digital camera , graphix or web building to rule out those being a problem . I did install my printer / scanner doey because I had to print some junk so thats still a ?
This time it crapped out while I was downloading my emails from outlook , that was the only program running , 0000006xc missing again just like that . Typical thought comma , glitched out mess instantly .
So this time Im going to do the same thing , run a minimum of programs and thunderbird and see if it works .
