2nd Gen Aircare Failure

Went for my first attempt today and failed (not surprised), but not by much (surprised).

I only failed one area - Carbon Monoxide - Driving Test.
I got a 1.38, the max is 1.26.

It's a stock 350 SBC with an Edelbrock 1604 carb. Suggestions are welcome. No emmisions equipment or cats on the car (don't need to have them - it's an '81).

Spoke to a guy who apparently can get cars past aircare and he suggested running the car as cold as possible. I always thought you wanted the reverse, but he said because there are no cats that heat is the enemy. He even suggested putting ice on the intake manifold before going through.

Still have 15 days, so I'm not that worried. But I'd like to get it through sooner than later.

Thanks,
Grant

I wonder how your car would react if you purchased a CatConvert off someone and installed it on your 2nd Gen?
Would it lose power? (more-so......)
I wonder if you would pass with flying colors.......

Problem is I'd have to install two cats since I have true dual exhaust and I'd rather spend that money elsewhere.

Any other ideas? The guy said there probably isn't much you can do with the carb.

Man, I HATE aircare!!! If they really wanted to reduce emissions they have a lot of other areas to go after, what a friggin money grab!!

We all feel the same way man.
Hopefully when their contract is up in 2006 the provicial government will take a close look at the results and not renew.

What were you other readings

If you HC was good you more then likely have a lean missfire. Due too plug /wire. Possibley lean air fuel
If HC was borderline i would try leaning her out a touch

My HC was good (108 - max 192).

I'll double check all the plugs / wires. They should be fine since I did them all not too long ago.

Well I PASSED!

Thanks LT1Z28. I checked over my wires and realized that when the tranny shop connected the kickdown cable the air cleaner assembly loosened on of the distributor connections.

Put my old air cleaner on, checked all the plugs and went back through. Passed with flying colours.
