Welcome to the board. There are many ways to improve performance and many of them depend on how you plan to use your car. However I can honestly sat that the very best modifications I did to mine (for general use) were a short throw shifter (I had a manual), headers (improved power and fuel mileage), and cold air filter and tube (improved mileage and performance). Beyond that, check the tech forums for advice and results.
In my personal experience, headers improved a lot and when I later added a cat back I enjoyed the sound but could not quantify any actual improvement in performance. My first headers were 1 5/8 shorties (which are fine for a stock vehicle). When I upgraded to a stroker a couple of years later I also upgraded the headers to 1 7/8 long tubes.
