"polishing" a head unit ???
"polishing" a head unit ???
>I thought someone here did a great job polishing their fuel rails or something . I want to polish the head unit on my supercharger while it's still new in the box and I have access to all sides of it .
Do you have to sand the rough surface first then attack it with the buffing compound ? any tips would be appreciated .

Ahem... you're speaking with one of the best!
LOL J/K
Ok on your supercharger... I would probably start out with 600 grit then just work your way up in 200 grit increments. Go all the way up to 1500, maybe 2000 grit if you like. I then use Turtle Wax rubbing compound a few times, then Turtle Wax polishing compound a few times.
For the final finish, I get my best results with Eagle One aluminum polish. Check out my websites to see how my intake came out.
Don't cut any corners, since it will show in the finished product. My intake used to be all pitted, now you can barely see it at all in person. I personally think it makes my whole engine compartment look great. JMO
Good luck..

Hmm I forgot to ask you, when you say the "rough" part.. do you mean it has a porus look to it.. almost like a casting?
If it's rough like that (my plenum was that rough), I started out with a 180 grit so I could sand the aluminum flat. Then gradually worked my way up, same process as above.

its not worth the trouble polishing it. i have a polished procharger and you cant even see it. but maybe the vortech mounts in a location where you can see it.

>Hey Dennis ,
you should think about polishing up that ugly alternator
.
I'm not sure if you can see the head unit or not , but while I don't have my engine yet (7 people in front of me)
I have nothing better to do except pick up the unit and make funny sounds to make my 5 year old laugh by making the whinning sounds . What are you running for compression with your 383 ? Nick (Nu-tek) told me the short block was set for 9.0:1 ... isn't that high for a s/c ? especially with a t-trim ?

dont make fun of my alternater. thats a lovely piece of machinary. i agree with you but i just want to get the thing running good again/ i blew my header gaskets out so im coming home i think friday to get it fixed for saturdays dyno day.
my compression is 9.2 to 1. i like it because its not a dog when you are not on the boost. my mustang is 8.5. i think your 9.0 is fine. lots of people are running 9.0. i think marc is in that area also.
but it also depends how much boost you are planning to run. im around 13 14pds. if you pushing 20 then you might want to go lower compression.
the people who are building your motor should be able to help you i would think.
hows everything else going. are you going to deans.

>I just have to wait for the engine to get delivered and need to pick a cam (nu-tek only deals in Comp Cams) .So I will get a special grind from Crane Cams with the recommendations from Nick . I HAVE A GARAGE FULL OF PARTS ... oops CAPS LOCK
I won't go since I only have the Silverado 5.3L not the "girly" 4.8L like my wifes
. As far as hows everything ... it's just a waiting game whether or not we called back up for this extended part of a war with Iraq .
