Buying a car from out-of-state family member?
Buying a car from out-of-state family member?
Anyone familiar with the process? The gf is driving a car owned by her father and registered/insured in NY (where her family is from). She wants to buy it from him and register/insure it here in MA. The MA RMV website discusses a family member to family member transfer and also an out-of-state purchase, but nothing with the two? Is there any difference? Does she have to have it titled to her in NY (pay fees), and once that is settled, tranfer the registration to MA (pay more fees)? or is there a simpler procedure? Can it be transfered to her and then registered in MA all in one transaction? How does the car become a registered/insured MA citizen? Suggestions? Should we stop by the RMV and ask? Thanks. -Jeff
Re: Buying a car from out-of-state family member?
I bought an old Lincoln Town Car from my brother a couple of years ago. He lives in NYC. Just made up a simple bill of sale and he signed over the title. We called our insurance company and had them add it to our policy, fax a copy of our insurance certificate, went to the town it is garaged in and paid the excise tax, then went to the DMV with the insurance fax and excise tax paperwork, paid the sales tax and registration fees, and they handed us plates. That was all there was to it.
