Building up the Z

Building a 383 for my 95Z. Components are

cola crank
Eagle h beam rods
je pistons
Oliver billet splayed 4 bolt main caps
XE214/224 114 .565/.605
Ported LT1 castings (my current ones)
Vortech S Trim 12-15psi

Should be good for 600rwhp with tuning (even with the baby cam). Could spray a little gas too

Be careful what you wish for

It gets expensive and painful.

Haha! I'll avoid Quest, I am building it myself. The block is all set already. I picked such a small cam so I can pass emissions. I wish I knew how some of you guys were passing...

I already had it and was planning on running it on the bottom end. Now i have just decided to build a forged bottom for it.

Yeah...I decided that I have the car setup the wway i want, i might as well keep her. I wanted more power though, and I didnt want to strap the blower on the current setup and blower the motor up. I'd rather do all the work now and not worry about it.

You might have some trouble lowering your CR enough to get the kind of (non-intercooled I assume) boost you want. Trust me I know as I just built my blower 383 last year. I foolishly assumed I could lower the CR enough just with pistons when I bought my ported stock castings the year before. The biggest dish I found was JE (31cc) for use on a 5.7 rod. I had no problem as I don't plan on revving past 6K. Plus going to a longer rod puts the wrist pin higher and weakens the crown.

You can open up the chambers on the stock heads as Marc did but it wasn't worth the money for me. I think my CR is somewhere in the neighborhood of 9.3:1. Here is an example for ya: on my engine the difference between a zero deck and a .010" deck changes the CR from 9.22 to 9.41.

Another thing is that to make 12 psi on a 383 will require you to spin the S-trim pretty hard, further heating the air and reducing the boost you can make without detonating (assuming you want to run on 93).

Another thing I found out was that Eagle rods won't clear the oil pan. I went with more expensive HRC rods at the advice of someone on here, I think it was StrokerAce. The HRC rods came with better ARP bolts and did clear the stock oil pan.

Thank you for the good info. I am using the following:
Cola 3.75 crank
Eagle 5.7" H Beam Rods with the ARP bolts
JE -31cc Pistons
Alky Injection for my cooling

I will definitely check on the oil pan issue. I plan on running the stocker.

I will be using the 6.66 crank pulley/2.75 sc pulley to net me max flow (50,000rpm) of the S/C @ 6k rpm. My cam is a custom cam from Bret Bauer which will pass emissions. His engine dyno analysis figures on my setup making 681hp @ 5750rpm and 704tq@ 4750rpm at the flywheel with 14.5psi and a good tune.
