What do you use to pull timing?

Thinking of buying a nitrous kit in the near future, I understand you need to retard timing when running anything over a 150 shot.

What I want to know is there a way to pull timing while I am in the car? Instead of getting off and messing with an ignition box.

TIA,
Jose`

my ignition is in the glove box. but even if it is in the engine bay, you don't have to mess with it. the Mallory 685 has a selectable retard. it retards the timing automatically when the N2O system is armed (a 12v source is applied to the ignition and tells it to retard the timing). all you do set the box to retard as much as you want and when you arm the system it does it for you.

I use the MSD three step retard box.. set the retard with a chip and forget it!

i used to have a 4 stage Accel retard box on mine.

i now have a 685 Mallory box that i use to retard the timing on the nitrous

regardless of which box you use to retard the timing, you dont need to do anything to make the timing change when it comes time to spray. the way you wire them up, the retard automatically turns on when the nitrous is activated, and goes away when the nitrous is shut off

Another vote for the mallory box. I've got mine wired wrong right now though so it's retarding timing no matter what. Sorta sucks cause the box won't pull less than 1* even though it changes in .1* steps. So I'm driving around pulling 1* all the time until I get my butt out there to re-wire it.

My method is kinda awkward, but necessary for me. I have two entirely different PCM programs, one for blower+nitrous and one for blower alone. Among other changes, the nitrous progem has 5 degrees less timing. I have to reprogram when I use the nitrous, which is usually only at the track. Sometimes when I go out looking for trouble, I load the nitrous program. That remote bottle opener is neat!

rich, that is kind of a pain isn't it? have you ever thought of a different ignition that can pull the 5* for you? you could always run the blower program, then when the N2O is armed pull the 5*. the mallory also is able to be set up for a map sensor. this way you can set it to pull different amounts of spark at different boost manifold pressures/boost. this would make the best power!

Thanks, Fellas

Looks like i am going to have it retard automatically when the nitrous is activated

Now it's time to decide on an ignition box.

Thanks, again

Yes, but there are a number of other differences in the program. So on the whole, this seems to work best. As I said, in the past I only rarely used the N2O on the street, and that was when I had "only" 600rwhp without the nitrous. Next years setup will be in the 700rwhp range without the N2O and I can't see ever using it on the street. Even without the N2O I have a different program for the track, so it's no extra work to load the nitrous program. In fact, I have a spare PCM and may just keep one for the track and the other for the street. It takes about 2 minutes to swap the PCM.

Does the MSD 6AL have anything for timing retard?
