stock ls1 nitrous questions

My buddy has a 00 camaro and is about to put the new NOS plate wet system on his car and I have a few questions. First of all he has a stock fuel pump and we were curious on how much of a shot the stock pump will handle. And the other question is to due with timing. Do you have to have a way to retard the timing? Ive been told people run a 150 shot without doing anything with timing and they havent recorded any knocks. We are looking at running a 125-150 shot on the car. Any suggestions or experience is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: stock ls1 nitrous questions

While some get away with running an excessivly rich jetting to try and get away without pulling timing(like some of the nitrous manufactures do in their kits), it's really very far from being the right way and safest way to do things, it's just the cheap way.....I would at least get an adjustable MSD timing retard box wired in ,or even better yet, a whole ignition with adjustable retard function and an adjustable revlimiter built in, the MSD digital 6, and Mallory units are both good for this, this way you can pull the recomended rule of thumb 2 degrees of timing per 50 HP increase.....As far as the fuel pump, I always run two good pumps, but many get away with just their one properly working factory fuel pump for small shots like you are talking about......just make sure to use a fuel pressure safety switch (set perfectly) to dissarm the nitrous solenoid incase of a fuel pressure drop during a run....a step or two colder plugs should also be used and won't cause any problems while not running the bottle and just driving around...and a seperate window switch would also be a good idea....the Mallory ignition has that built in as well if you go that route.....I installed a NOS wet kit on my buddies 99 camaro LS1 ....it has had a 150 shot on it since 02....I put the above things I recomended to you on it and it's still running great.......good luck with it.........Joe

Re: stock ls1 nitrous questions

On my friends 00 Z28, we used the Timing Tuner box to pull out 5 degrees of timing total for a 100 rwhp TNT shot (he has advanced timing in his n/a tune).
He was running a stock fuel pump, but I suggest a new pump as cheap insurance for anything above 100. Personally, I run a racetronix kit/hot wire harness with my 125/150 shot on an LT1

not retarding the timing is a mistake. 3k engine rebuild < 250$ ignition upgrade.

I've been told that at 400RWHP, you should upgrade the fuel pump.
