retarding timing with 100-125 shot?

I just bought an edelbrock system from the board and am anxious to get it installed. Question is can i install the base kit they offer without any MSD ignition retarding and run it being ok? The kit just has the activation switch and essentials. Wanting to know if installation and usage that way without any additional components will be safe. -thanks

I would get an occasional blip of knock, but hardly any, with both 100 and 125 shot. I think it may have been a bad EGR valve contributing to that anyway.

You should be fine on 93+ octane.

Sure, glad to help. N2O is fun.

I'm running an Accel 300+ digital ignition with Autolite 104 plugs (used to be gapped at .038, but changing to .045 to test it out), Accel 9000+ wires & coil.

One thing I can recommend: make sure your plugs are new and are not fouled out. I was getting major knock retard, even with a 75-shot, and it turned out to be bad plugs.

Once I changed them, it went away except for the occasional blip I mentioned above.

i wouldnt go much over a 100 shot without something to pull timing.

make sure you dont have platinum plugs, swap em out for standard plugs.

i run a msd digital 6 and Taylor 409 race wires. running NGK TR6's for now, might swap to TR8's for the 200 shot im gonna abuse this car with.

I'm running Jacob ProStreet Ignition. Works great. I've heard good things about Accel and MSD. MSD is a bit more fragile and some replace the modules after extended vibrations.

If you are getting knock retard, something is wrong.

I've got shift knock which occurs because of my lame throwout bearing which needs to be replaced.

If you use Race Gas, get unleaded or you'll toast your O2s.

One thing you have to be careful of is if your running tuning other than stock there is a good possiblity that your timing has been increased. I would run no more than the stock timing at the rpm v map that you plan on spraying for the 100 shot and pull 2 degrees for the 125 shot. I run race gas when I spray the 150 shot and pull 2 degrees.

I run the Autolite 103s gaped at .040. I also run a Mallory ignition which allows me to pull timing with ease.

Its $215 at summit.com ....Mallory Hyfire VI 685 CD is what you want ...you can do rev limiter, timing retard and window switch with it.

Not race gas but...

I always ran about 5 gallons of regular 93.. chevron is probably the best 9 my Uncle is a oneof many Vp's at Chevron.. and guess where Amoco gold comes from???

i run 5 galons an 1 - 1.5 of the cheapest unleadedlower octane race fuel.. usually 114 sometime.. less..

no probs.. you can run a gallon of regular and not toast your 0'2 but not a rugular full diet

Nos octane booster also is prove to increase the octane...

100 shot.. should beok do the plugs and wires correctly.. you'll hear it.. i dd on my 5.0 its unmistakable..

then i used the mix and gone was the problem

had a kit on both my GM's in the recent past.. and no problems.. do the math for 1.5 gllons of 114 and 5 gallons of 93.. it bumps it up.. just right.. you don't want it too high.. or you'll lose hp...

no reason i don't have it now i'm gonna do a dry 100 on the Ls1.. they are just both wll balanced ..in NA form

I pull 4 degrees of timing, and 5 gals 100 octain unleaded mixed with 91 pump gas. 175hp shot, and see virtually no knock retard.
But I used to get a lot of KR, with only a 100hp shot on pump gas.
So obviously pulling timing and running higher octain fuel is the ticket. But you could probably get away with either or.
