Question about nitrous.

You guys who actually use nitrous, or who know a lot about it.

What would i have to have done before installing a nitrous kit..

I'm really not going to shoot much at all, im thinking i only want a 50 / 75 shot, just to ease down the track a little quicker.

How much stress does this low of a shot put on a engine, should i install new heads/headers/cam before i do this?

Also, dry or wet shot?

Thanks.

Re: Question about nitrous.

You can easily spray 125 as long as you get the safety equipment to go along with it. Look into a wet kit, window switch, fuel pressure safety switch, colder plugs, bottle heater and purge. Many people who run nitrous get the Mallory 685 ignition because it acts as your window switch and can pull timing for when you are spraying. If you want to be track legal then you also need to look into a blowdown tube. I personally got my kit from harrisspeedworks.com and got a custom blowdown from them too and they were really easy to work with.

Re: Question about nitrous.

You could spray a little higher of a shot then a 50 or 75 and still be safe. With what you do want to spray though, either a dry or wet kit will work. As mentioned above, make sure you run all of the "extras" to ensure the safety of your motor and the reliablility of your nitrous system.

Any type of power adder is going to put stress on your motor, it just depends if you go stupid with it or not. As everyone else has said make sure to get all the necessary components to go with it. Nitrous may seem cheap at first (~400 a kit) but once you get all the extra stuff you can easily see over a grand in parts. Just make sure to do it right and safe.

You can put nitrous on a completely stock car if you want, but of course heads/headers/cam will just make it that much faster.

Re: Question about nitrous.

To add to the questions and the original poster may also be wondering the same thing (im hijacking the thread ) Is a new fuel pump needed for a wet kit? Also, Ive read of the window switches, and will they work with the original computer? Im not for sure how they get access to your rpms?

Upgraded fuel pump is a good thing to do if you have the money to spend on it. Just be sure to watch your FP while spraying to see what it does. Much over a 150hp shot and id say upgrade the pump for sure. The window switch works with the stock computer to access the rpms and control the spray.

Thanks alot. Im going to go with the n2o idea after i finally decided I wanted to keep my car as stock feeling/sounding as possible but still have some power when i want it. I have a lot to learn though. It will be the middle of winter/early spring before I install a setup. I was thinking around a 150 shot on a wet kit.

Re: Question about nitrous.

My stock unit went out on me when I was just spraying a 100 shot. If you got a lot of miles on it I would say go ahead and replace it.

Its got 67k on it. I dont want to replace it until it needs it, not a fun thing to do.

Its still a very good idea to upgrade your fuel pump when spraying a decent size shot on a wet kit. The Racetronix 255lph pump which retails around 140.00 is one of the favored pumps. You could always do the trap door method where you cut an access hole above the fuel pump and pull it straight through the top rather then the hassle of dropping the tank and getting it from the bottom. Do a "search" on the trap door method and you will be able to pull up some of the old posts that outline the process very clearly.

Ya, but would you just rather replace it now or get your nitrous done and then realize your most likely going to need to replace it anyways???

Just do the trap door method, this is what I did and it took me about 2-3 hours to do it.
