Pulling timing vs. PCM tuning

So say I have a custom PCM tune loaded for N2O runs which applies the proper timing retard along the RPM range...properly tuned for my setup.

Is there any point in employing the timing retard on an aftermarket ignition? This will help me choose between the $195 MSD 6AL and the $280 MSD Digital-6 Plus.

I can't see any reason you'd want another retard box, if you've got the pcm programmed with the retard already...

Wonderful More money left for FPSS, blowdown, purge, RPM window switch, etc...

BTW thanks LPEdave for the killer N2O writeup on your site. I've referred to it many times.

Cool

I have been doing a LOT of checking in to this, and hereis what I found. If you tune your PCM for Nitrous (retard the timing) you will loose some power when you are off the bottle. I Am going to orer the Hyfire VI (part # 685) for my car. It has a built in window switch, rev limiter and built in retard module. I will use that so that I can I can runn my normal timing on the steet and when I am on the bottle I will have the retard amd window switch. That's my 2 cents worth. Good luck!!

dayusmc - good point, however, i will be running 2 different programs - one for track/N2O and one for the other 364 days of the year I like the idea of letting the PCM pull the timing better because you have more precise control of whats happening.

Dave I was running my nitrous program year round , because I like to play on the street every now and then. You really dont lose much preformance wise since timing is pulled at 95kpa map(WOT). If you are going to get an after market ignition I would recommend the Mallory Hyfire VI because it can do everything you need incase you deside to go that route in the future as I have. Ive been using it for a couple of months and its a nice unit. I belive JEGS has it for $199.

I can show you guys logs of runs w/n2o and w/o. Car pulled it's own timing on the juice (Max Retard). Go figure???

If your getting knock the pcm will retard the timing.....only problem is that the knock is doing damage before the pcm pulls the timing if it is indeed real knock and the pcm may pull more than is actually needed. The ideal is to pull the timing before the knock occurs.

Ild try running some 100-104 unleaded when you spray and see if timing is still pulled.

Greg,

I saw someone else mention that controller in another thread I made, and they also said they thought it was $199 (maybe it was you?). So I opened up my Jeg's and found it, p/n 650-685 - $220. My next question is, does this unit require an adapter/harness for our cars? I have a '96 but will be running a '95 PCM. For $220 plus if it requires a $25 harness, thats getting close to the Digital-6...
