ooppps.....just had a nitrous backfire, what to do?

OK last night I was out riding around with a few friends of mine and me and a guy in a 35TH SS were getting ready to race. I had used the nitrous earlier that night with no problems. We were both rolling at arounnd 30 MPH and I was about 42-4400RPM. I jumped on it and heard a loud pop and smoke started coming out from under my hood. I pulled the car over and noticed that it popped the intake elbow off the intake, blew the **** out of my filter and descreened my MAF for me, LOL. I hooked everthing back up and the car fired up with no problem, minus the air filter. The MAF was just fine and the car ran like normal all the way home. Now, should I check anything else out to make sure everything is ok??? Like I said, the car ran fine, no miss, no knock, no stutter, nothing, it just no longer has an air filter or a screen in the MAF. What do you guys think I should do?

I'd verify the tiny wires inside the Maf aren't damaged. If they are fine, which they probably are or the car would have not started or ran like crap. Replace all the damaged parts and drive away. Go get that 35th back. You might want to check your plugs also.

wires on the MAF are just fine, i just got done tearing it all back down because last night it was dark and I couldn't see that well. Well at least now I have a descreened MAF, LOL. Ill go check the plugs right now and see how they are. Is this something that happens often???? I have talked to a few people and they just said that sometimes it happens and not to worry about it. But, my dad is throwing a huge fit saying how dangerous nitrous is and that I should have never put it on the car in the first place.

I had that happen after a burnout.... car stalled, tried to restart it and BAM!!! Turned out to be a leaky nitrous solenoid.

The thing that took the biggest hit on mine was the throttle blades, since I was trying to start the engine and they were closed. Bent the bottom 1/2 of each blade out at a 45-degree angle.

If you can get a scanner on it, check all the items that might be damaged by excessive pressure in the intake manifold.... MAP sensor and MAF sensor (I don't run an MAF sensor) would be the main things to check. Then verify you didn't blow any vacuum lines off.... check both ends of each line - at the intake manifold and at whatever they hook to. Hopefully the check valve in the Opti vent line protected the Opti case.

Good idea about the leaky selenoid. My last nitrous pass last summer I had a back fire. I will check before I run it again.

Nitrous is not dangerous if done properly.

Been there done that. I about crapped myself when it happened. I thought I blew it up. Same damage to the elbow, maf, and filter. Live and learn.

well i dont think it would be the solenoids. the fuel one was leaking and so i had them both rebuilt.
