nitrous...illegal?
After being pulled over by a cop for my blackouts, "illegal taillight covers," the officer noticed the nitrous gauge and gave me a speech on street racing being a "criminal offense", and on nitrous oxide being a controlled substance which if you are pulled over and have in your car you can go to jail...(my bottle wasn't in the car at the time)
Does anybody know if this is true, can you go to jail if you have nitrous in your car or was the officer simply trying to scare me?

You need to review the specific laws of your state... you can't go by what anyone from another state says.
In NJ, you need a "Permit To Handle Nitrous Oxide". I just renewed mine. Free from the Dept. of Health and Senior Services, Consumer and Environmental Health Service. In theory, you can't even buy/refill N2O unless you have the permit, with a copy for the seller, but that is sort of a 50/50 thing when it comes to refills. Some places ask for the permit, others don't. Some tracks ask for it in tech. On occaisions, there are NJ State Police present at "tech", or roaming the pits.
I believe that NJ law treats N2O as a controlled dangerous substance, and there are penalties for illegal possession which involve a fine and/or jail time. I have never heard of anyone actually being charged. But I think having the permit would go a long way toward keeping John Law off your back...

Crimes Chapter 877
877.111 Inhalation, ingestion, possession, sale, purchase, or transfer of harmful chemical substances; penalties.--
(4) Any person who knowingly distributes, sells, purchases, transfers, or possesses more than 16 grams of nitrous oxide commits a felony of the third degree which shall be known as unlawful distribution of nitrous oxide, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. For purposes of this subsection, in addition to proving by any other means that nitrous oxide was knowingly possessed, distributed, sold, purchased, or transferred, proof that any person discharged, or aided another in discharging, nitrous oxide to inflate a balloon or any other object suitable for subsequent inhalation creates an inference of the person's knowledge that the nitrous oxide's use was for an unlawful purpose.
This subsection does not apply to the possession and use of nitrous oxide as part of the care and treatment of a disease or injury by a practitioner licensed under chapter 458, chapter 459, chapter 464, chapter 466, or chapter 474; as a food-processing propellant; as a semiconductor oxidizer; as an analytical chemistry oxidizer in atomic absorption spectrometry; in the production of chemicals used to inflate airbags; as an oxidizer for chemical production, combustion, or jet propulsion; or as a motor vehicle induction additive when mixed with sulphur dioxide.
