Nitrous Cam

Would a GM 847 cam be suitable for nitrous or do you have to have one with more lobe seperation (i.e. LSA 114/115). Pretty much should nitrous be treated like a blower? And also what octane fuel do you have to use for something like a 300 shot?

I think specs on that cam are:
234/242 duration at .050"
539/558 lift with 1.5 rockers
112 LSA

Re: Nitrous Cam

Is this a daily driver or a dedicated drag car?

Re: Nitrous Cam

It would be a "daily driver" in the sense that i would drive it around town, but i have another vehicle so it would be a weekend car/truck/whatever mainly. Right now it is just an engine block in the garage with a few major parts scattered around. That said, I dont care a whole lot about its street manners as long as it is safe to operate on the road. By the way whatever i put the motor in it will probably have a Muncie 4spd.

I've sprayed 200 w/ the 847, worked out fine.

Re: Nitrous Cam

Good to know, would you have to retard the timing with a 300+ shot of nitrous?

Re: Nitrous Cam

I did with the 250 shot, w/ 300 I would definently pull timing and use highier octane fuel.

Re: Nitrous Cam

I'm running the GTP6 cam with a 150 (soon to be a direct port 250) and this is my daily driver. The GTP6 is very simular to the gm847 and the cc306 I just liked the numbers a little better.

Noticed your in wilmington nice to see some fellow NC'ers. We got a group that hangs out on saturdays give me a pm if you're interested.

Re: Nitrous Cam

You had better be pulling timing and considering fuel if you plan to run any shot of that size.

Unless you like building motors.

Re: Nitrous Cam

I'd use a dedicated fuel system for something that big....all just hypothetical at this point though. I want to build a 396 but i've heard that the rings are too close together to handle something like a 300+ shot.

I'm looking one of nitrodaves stand alone systems. And the nice thing about where I live is I'm 1 1/2 hours away from jeff creech!!!

Re: Nitrous Cam

Jeff C. is good people. He does a great job tuning as well.

The Nitro Dave stand alone system is THE EASIEST way to do a stand alone system. It's likely comparable in cost to doing it on your own too if you factor in all the problems you will encounter.

And I think I'm Jeff's only customer to have almost died for a tune.

Haha...

Good luck with the build up and planning that goes into it. SEARCH, SEARCH, SEARCH...and you will learn more than you can imagine. Here and at LS1tech.

As to your first post:
It's a general consensus from what I can tell that a higher (numerical) LSA is important when you start stepping up to the 200+ shots. They will start to show the advantage on the bottle over a cam that is allowing everything to get sucked past the exhaust valve. If you plan on regularly running a large shot on the bottle, go with a higher LSA. You will suffer some on motor, but you will shine on the bottle.

Re: Nitrous Cam

I appreciate that, I'll just get one custom made with similar specs and a higher LSA. I don't know what i will do now though, I want a 396 but I also want JE nitrous pistons (They're the best right?) But i also dont want to spend $120 for each custom piston. So maybe i wont do such a big shot of nitrous or maybe i'll go with a 383. So many decisions....

Re: Nitrous Cam

I've read a few post and talked with a few people about anything over 383, and alot say they don't hold up well to big shot or large amount of boost.

Again this is all second hand info, when I was doing some research on a stroker motor.

Re: Nitrous Cam

Best way to conceptualize a good nitrous cam is to think of it as a good NA cam with 5-10 degrees of added exhaust duration and another 2 degrees or so of LSA to compensate for the longer exhaust duration. However, unless you running a large amount of nitrous, the gain over the base NA cam is not going to be huge. Basically, if you have a street car that you occasionally run nitrous on, use what would be a good cam for your NA setup and don't worry about the nitrous.
