Mallory box in trunk?
Mallory box in trunk?
I currently have my mallory 685 in my glovebox, but I drove about 45 minutes the other day, and checked the box, and it was real hot and making a buzzing noise. So I am wanting to move it to another location. I was thinking about mounting it in my trunk, like where an amp rack mounts, just fabbing me up something for the back wall. Or maybe under the hood, but idk where it would go since my CAI is in the way. Any thoughts? Will it still work as good in the rear with more wire as opposed to in the glovebox with a short amount of wire?
Someone in another thread long, long ago in a galaxy far away said they mounted it under the front passenger seat. They would have added several feet of wire.
The buzzing (chattering) sound happens when the box is cold too; it's always there when the engine is running.

I have mine fastened inside the glove box, it's not that hard to do. But if you are going to have it active all the time you will want to put it in a good air exchange area anyway.
Like I said in another thread, leaving it on shortens the life of the optispark so I don't mind it in the glove box because it's only connected for nitrous. There's still room left in there for the loopback connector, vehicle registration and a pencil.
My 685 Hyfire VI definitely makes a sound when active whether cold or warm.

A computer fan was something I was thinking about.

I wonder how many miles that 6 years equates to? I've had my 95 for more than 3 years and have added only 4 thousand miles so years means something but use/miles tells more.
Perhaps people make the early fatigue claim because of their own logic and there is no merit to that claim. As shoebox said, people like to make unsubstantiated claims. It's just what I got from the administrator of LS1LT1.COM and I believed him.
You are boosting the high side volts / amperes. To me, when I have my unit in the loop I'm asking my ignition system to reach levels not intended by the manufacturer. Some go to a more robust coil when adding a CDI intensifier but maybe that is for the purpose of performance more than component strength. For my situation connecting the Mallory when it isn't needed just adds another component into the mix even if the failure issue is moot.
BTW, I recommend reading the manual regarding placement and heat. If you find a place to mount that fan in the glove box I'll be asking questions.
I have mine mounted in the trunk on the left hand side, opposite the spare tire well. I ran all of the wiring underneath the door sill panels and behind the sail panel until it finally reaches the box in the trunk. I will try to post up a picture later.
I ran a MSD 6A and a Crane PS-91 coil for 50K miles with my original opti with no issues. I put a new opti in when I rebuilt my engine (old one was still going strong). I presently have 41K miles on my present opti with a Crane HI-6R ignition and the Crane PS-91 coil, no opti issues.
