Help me pick a camshaft!

Okay, I've got a new engine in my camaro this year, and I'm not happy at all with the camshaft selection.... I'm sure one of you pros can help me pick a new one... I really want to go solid roller this time... Here's the specs on my car:

383 Stroker
10:1 JE Custom Dished Nitrous Pistons
JE HNS rings (hellfire)
Studded 4 bolt Mains
Scat 4340 Crankshaft
Scat 4340 I Beam rods (7/16"ARP rod bolts)
Dart Pro1 Aluminum 215cc Heads (2.05, 1.60 valves)
Dart Single Plane Intake Manifold
Holley 750 Double Pumper
Hedman 1 3/4" Headers
Comp NX284H Nitrous HP Camshaft (.507i, .525e duration @ .050 240i, 253e, LSA 113.0)
1.5 Full Roller Rockers
TH350 tranny (Hughes GM92 Converter, Transgo full manual shift kit)
Richmond 3.90 gears, Eaton posi....

I really want to swap to a meatier cam... The one I'm using is way too mild. The car does get driven on the street some, but not too often... I do run pretty large doses of nitrous on it.. My best time is 10.77 @ 127.13 on 300 shot (6000 DA)... My opinion is that it should be faster than that on that much nitrous... What camshaft would you guys run with this engine setup??? Anything else I should change???

Re: Help me pick a camshaft!

yeah 125mph trap is REAL slow for a 300shot on that car. I would hope for 120-125mph NA. How does it run without the n2o? Your cam looks like a good n2o grind, 13° of seperation from int/exh, pretty good amount of duration for a 383. Your lift is real low though. With those heads and solid lifters, I'd get something like ~.600 lift @ 050. Maybe something on a 110-111 lsa as well since you can spin the engine up a lot higher with the solid lifter setup, and all that n2o will keep your torque up out of the hole.

Re: Help me pick a camshaft!

Okay, I called comp cams, and this is what they recommended...

242/254 duration

570/582 lift

114 LSA

Solid Roller

That is actually a lot smaller than I thought they would recommend..... Currently I'm running the following:

240/253 duration

507/525 lift

113 LSA

Hydraulic Flat tappet

Did comp cams make a good choice on the solid roller above??? I was thinkin more radical than that...

Good choice - well it's hard to say... Did you give them any flow numbers on the heads, tell them the stall size, and give them an rpm limit you wanted to keep within, advise them the weight of the car? Are you willing to swap springs, or are you looking at lift limitations there as well?

Did you mention anthing about streetcar or streetdriving when asking for the cam recommendation. Sometimes all the vendors here is the word "street", and end up de-nutting what could have been a good combo. Don't know if that's the case here, but I've seen it happen before with Comp Cams tech...

Call up Cam Motion, give them the complete details, and get a second opinion +1 (225) 926-6110 - couldnt hurt. They can offer custom grind solid rollers for about the same price as an off the shelf Comp or Crane grind.

Re: Help me pick a camshaft!

They asked me what heads I was runnin, so I told them.. They didn't ask anything about the flow numbers on them... It's actually like they just enter all of the data into a computer, press submit, and out spits a cam... Do they have most popular cylinder heads in their database??? I told them the weight of the car, what kinda car, and that my main concern was TRACK PERFORMANCE, but it may see the street 2 or 3 times a month.. I would personally only want to spin it to around 7000, just to be a little safer...

Thanks

ya, they must have flow data for those heads, although those heads should flow well into the .6xx range, makes me wonder why the lift is not above .600.

Re: Help me pick a camshaft!

Its probably all in who you talk to, but the guy I talked to at comp originally gave me a TERRIBLE cam recommendation for a vortec headed 350. He recommended a magnum 292 which would have been way too big for my small intake runners, wouldnt have cleared the exhaust side as well as a dual pattern since vortecs have a pretty weak factory I/E ratio and had more lift than I should have been looking at for my application. I would take the recommendation with a grain of salt, just like their customer service when you wipe a lobe on one of their camshafts...

Re: Help me pick a camshaft!

Pick a good NA cam for your application, add 4-6 degrees of exhaust duration and a degree or two of LSA and VOILA, a good N2O cam!
