Drivetrain Limitations

I am considering a wet nitrous system for my car. It has over 150,000 miles on it.
  • The engine was rebuilt this winter (bored .030 over, new stock lifters, new stock springs, new pushrods, original rockers, new stock retainers, original crank was turned, original valves, original connecting rods).
  • The transmission (4L60E) was rebuilt in May of 2006 (see sig.)
  • The 10-bolt was rebuilt in October of 2006 (new 3-series carrier, new ring and pinion).
  • All of the fueltrain is stock (except for an AFPR) and has 150,000 mi on it.
I would like to start with a small shot, maybe 75, and work my way up from there as I decide I can get away with it. As I understand, up to a 125 shot can be safe on a stock motor. With what shot size should I be worried about trashing my rear end and transmission? How much can the drivetrain take? I would be using street tires, but would like to know about limitations using DRs as well.

Thanks in advance

It looks like you invested a good chunk of change getting your drivetrain rebuilt back to factory spec. Judging how much abuse a factory part can take is sort of a guessing game, my best advice is if you are that worried about breaking something or cannot afford it this time around, I wouldn't chance it. If you do want to still go ahead with it, keep it at a moderate level such as a 100 shot. You might also want to look at the sticky on this forum which will give you a good idea of the extra "safety" gear you should be running along side a nitrous setup. Also, if you go with a wet kit, it might not be a bad idea to upgrade your fuel pump to a higher flowing unit.

As stated above any modifications to a vehicle runs the risk of damaging parts.

But with that being said.....with yours being an auto it will be a little easier on drivetrain parts. A window switch will be very usefull for you to take some pressure off the tranny. You can set it to deactivate the kit before the shift point to reduce the slippage/heat build up during the shifts.

Also I would go ahead and add the Racetronix kit to replace your 150K mile fuel pump.

Feel free to call or PM me if you have any specific questions and I will be happy to go over the many different options with you.

A 75 shot and most of the time 100 shot is doable with a stockish tune and a low milage pump but you seem to have alot of miles on your pump which i would replace with a racetronix kit with the hotwire kit!125 + 150 shot with a good pump and a tune is very easy with a stock internal ls1
