Compucar Dry Nitrous in a bag - good for beginners?
Here's the tech-spec/pitch from their website:
Product # 690310
Nitrous in-a-bag (Pro Street Heat)The Pro Street Heat was designed to be the simplest nitrous system on the market to use and install. This is a "dry system" injecting only nitrous into the motor. It works by "tricking" the computer back into the cold start mode. In cold start mode, the computer injects more fuel into the motor just like a carburetor does when the choke is on. Other sensors detect the oxygen rich air and adjust the fuel mixture and timing to compensate for this extra income of oxygen making this system near fool proof on performance. This kit comes with jetting from small, medium, large, extra large, and kickin ***. This will give you approximately 20 to 100 HP on your motor. Installation on this kit takes 10 minutes to complete and the kit can easily be place onto other vehicles in the same amount of time. This kit is designed to work on any EFI (fuel injected)vehicle." Key Benefits
This is a great beginner kit.
The design of this kit means no adjustments to the motor.
No one will know you have the kit on the car.
Ok, so here's my question. I am new to nitrous - I called them and talked to them (Tabitha, who was very cool and answered all my questions) - the setup runs straight to the air intake elbow, right before the TB. As mentioned above it tricks the system into adjusting for the incoming oxygen. The setup has a cigarette lighter adapter which is your power supply and then a push button switch for your n20 activation. You turn the valve of the canister and then basically, when you are ready for naaaaaawwwwsss, you push and hold the button down for a few seconds (or however long you need it.)
She indicated that you don't need any pressure gauges, window switches (that made me kinda nervous) and anything else, becuz the kit is AS IS and ready to roll. All the parts are pre-installed (solenoids, plastic cable and pushbutton swithc, steel tubing, compression fitting, several jets - so you can adjust anywhere from 20-100hp) brackets, mounting board, etc.)
She said you can fit gauges on there if you like, but there is no need. She says she hasn't seen anyone connect a RPM switch or window for this model - becuz they feel it's not necessary. She indicated, that you push it during your desired RPM and release to stop the flow.
So whaddaya think? Is this a good "beginners" route to the world of NAAAAAWWWS?
Engine-wise, what do I need to upgrade? Rods? Springs? internals?
Thanks guys!

I've been running this system for a few months now on my '94 Vette.
Most of what she told you was right.
It is a dry kit, meaning that you spray it about 6 inches before the MAF sensor and let it add the fuel. It comes in a black gym bag. The solenoid is mounted up near the bottle in the bag, so it's real easy to hide on a car. All you have running up to the engine bay is a peice of black plastic line. When you're ready, you pull the power cord out,...plug it into the cigarette lighter, turn the bottle on,..and you're ready. They say you don't need a gauge or bottle warmer with the Bag Kit, but if you want any kind of consistancy you do. The bottle pressure can fluctuate a lot, and depending on the pressure can mandate exactly how hard of a "hit" the nitrous makes. They recommend running the kit about 950psi,...but I've had my best results about 1100. You don't want to go past 1200psi though because at or around 1225-1250 the solenoid will stick closed and won't open until the pressure goes down. The bottle has a pressure relief valve that will blow about 3000psi,...and the bottle itself is good up to about 5000psi, but it's best not to leave it out in the car in the sun during the day. I have a friend who wired a Bag Kit up to a WOT switch,...so it can be done....but as long as you can drive halfway decent, it's not needed. You've got an Auto, so that makes it even easier. Depending on the track, your tires, and current power,..the car may not hook if you hit it in 1st gear,...so you may have to wait until you roll out and shift to 2nd before you hit the button. Just make sure to let off the button if for any reason you let off the gas or go to less than WOT. The Kit comes with 5 jets. A "Small" 0.39 (recomended for 4-cyl), "Medium" 0.46 (for V-6), "Large" 0.63 (for V-8 or V-6), "X-tra Large" 0.76 (for V-8 only), and a "Kick-***" 0.86 (V-8 only). I'm using the 0.76 jet and when I dynoed the car, it worked out to about a 125-135hp shot. My times are in my sig. The kit is about $396, for the guage and a bottle warmer, count on spending about another $100. It takes about 20min to put the kit on the car. Longer if you feel like hiding it. I spent about an hour putting it on and had 3 friends look at the car for over a half hour and they couldn't find the kit.
I live about 5-10min from Compucar, so if you have any more questions,...let me know.

Thanx Rob! I found this to be very helpful!
Do you spray in all gears from 2nd up, or just in second?
What RPM range do you find works best for the spray?
What ignition are you using for your setup - also which plugs is your setup using?
Enuff question for this time out? heheh...thanx in advance bro.

You only want to spray when the car is above 3000rpm and at WOT.
I have a 6spd,...so I leave the line on motor,...then shift to 2nd. When I shift my RPM's only drop to about 4000rpm, so as soon as I hit 2nd, I hit the button. The I let off at 5400, shift to 3rd,...hit the button again,...let off at 5400, shift to 4th,...then back on the button through the traps. Since you have an auto, just hit the button when you got to WOT after the car is rolling enough that it will hook up.
Just to be safe I put a MSD 6A box on the car. I'm running Taylor 8mm wires and NGK TR5 plugs gapped at .035

Rob - you mean keep the button down from 2nd gear all the way to the traps at WOT? I thought n20 at shift points was bad?
Thank you for all the help! I may be contacting you soon.
Can anyone else verify that it's OK to have the n20 button pushed during shift points in a A4? I thought this was a no-no.

I'm confused. This works on LT-1's???
I was under the impression you had to do more than just spray pre-MAF to get an LT1 to put in enough fuel.

KASR_Z28,
Having never sprayed an auto before I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly confident that as long as your tranny is in good working order there should be no problem not lettig off the bottle between shifts. Some 6spd guys don't let off the bottle when powershifting.
grendal,
As long as your LT-1 car has a MAF sensor you're good to go. This kit will work on ANY car with a MAF sensor, and some speed density cars. However the speed density cars are a little more picky. A buddy has been running this kit for a few years on his ZR-1. Whenever he has to take his Dodge truck in for warrenty work we would alway put the Bag Kit on the Neon rental car and go out Mustang hunting.
You can call Eddie @ Compucar to ask a little more info about using this system on a speed density car, but if your car is a MAF car (I know the Vettes after 94 are) then all you have to do is spray it about 6inches before the MAF. All you're doing is adding in oxygen attached to two nitrogen atoms. The MAF sees this extra oxygen just like it would any.

After I read that,...I think I can explain how the MAF picks it up a little better.
The way a MAF sensor works is you have a couple of really thin exposed wires stretched accross the sensor. These wires are heated. As the incoming air into the engine blows past these wires, they are cooled down. Depending on how much, and at what rate the wires are cooled tells the ECM how much air is coming into the motor. It then compares this airflow rate to the fuel map table in the ECM and adds in the required fuel. So when the nitrous comes through the MAF sensor,...it doesn't exactly "see" oxygen. Just airflow. And since nitrous is extremely cold, it cools the MAF off a good bit and fairly fast which makes the ECM radically jump up the fuel going to the motor when this happens.
Does that make a little more sense?

Bone stock motor.
Nothing done internally.
The car has a K&N filter, MSD 6A ignition box, NGK plugs, Taylor wires, and a B&B TriFlow exhaust. That's it. No programmed ECM, no headers, nothing done to the fuel system, no Power Programmer, hell,...I haven't even bypassed the throttle body coolant lines yet.

Hi-psi, where exactly is Compucar? I used to live in Evans, just moved to Houston a few weeks ago. I remember racing a guy in a nice white 5.0 Mustang down at Carolina, he was talking about this exact kit but I figured it was some custom high dollar unit. This sounds like an option for me, I'm looking to break into the twelves.

You'll do more than break into the 12's with this kit,...with traction you could see 11's. All the times I've run have been on street tires waiting until 2nd gear to spray it.

You'll do more than break into the 12's with this kit,...with traction you could see 11's. All the times I've run have been on street tires waiting until 2nd gear to spray it.

Only lived in Augusta for a couple of years. I didn't really get into North Augusta much, unless I was on my way to Aiken to talk to a Chevelle buddy or to the strip. I checked out your videos on your site though, and I do remember seeing the TA make some passes at Carolina. Very nice. You don't happen to remember a dark green Z28 with a cutout down at the strip do ya? (I know, there's alot of em)That would be me.
