Anyone have installation instructions or owners manual for a NOS system
Anyone have installation instructions or owners manual for a NOS system
I just picked up the nitrous system and it is a NOS system. It came with basically all the parts included in the 05176NOS kit on Holley's website except for the fuel pump and an instruction manual. It also came with an MSD 6A and a MSD RPM activated switch part no--8950. I do have a custom programmed PCM with timing advanced so I assume I will need a manual timing control. The guy had this momentary switch with about 5 leads coming off of it but I think I will just pick up something basic.
What else do I need and does anyone have an owners/installation manual they can email me?
Thanks
John

Well I have a bottle, braided steel lines, 2 inline solenoids, a vacuum line. and a nozzle. This looks pretty straight forward. Then I have a relay, switch, and a MSD RPM activated switch(pn:8950). How do they all go together? When do I hit the switch and is it supposed to be held down or just pushed for a second and released?
By the way does anyone know what HP shot this is. It only came with one jet. It has 67 on the side of it.
I was kindof looking for a wiring diagram that shows how it all goes together. It looks pretty straight forward, but I am not positive. Also, how is this RPM activated swithch used. Is this the window switch I keep hearing about? will it shut off the nitrous at redline or something? How is it wired into the system?
ALSO is there anything else I need? Will the Walbro 255 be enough?
Thanks

The jet with 67 on the side I have no idea what that one is? All Nitrous kits come with a different "tune up"
And yes that RPM activated switch is a "window switch" and it should have two places to put rpm chips into?
1) were the nitrous comes on
2) were the nitrous shuts of
I'm really not too sure on how that wires in?
And from what I have been told the Walbro 255 intake fuel pump is VERY good!
You can call NOS and order the manual for the 5176 kit for something like $5 or $10. They do have a tendancy to get sloppy with orders and shipping, so it isn't always a successful step.
I have the manual, and if I had a copier at home I would copy it and send it to you. Since I don't have a copier, I could copy it for you at the local office store..... and its not that expensive. Would just take a day or two.
NOS includes the 0.067" nitrous jet with the kit, and the manual indicates "Power output is increased by 120-130 horsepower, and torque by 160-170 lb. ft. over stock". My experience with the kit indicated that is an accurate estimate.
There is also an "adjustable" feature available from NOS that allows you to add a (pseudo) fuel jet to control the fuel pressure, and different size nitrous jets to vary the HP from 75-150HP, or something like that. That add-on kit is not covered in the manual.
In the parts you mentioned, you didn't mention a blue pressure regulator, that mounts between the solenoids, and supplies the signal to the FPR to bump fuel pressure up when you spray. Do you have that part?
You should also have an inline booster fuel pump. Do you have that? Along with the fittings to allow it to be inserted in the stock fuel supply line with no cutting? WOT switch?
Let me know if you want a copy of the manual.

There is a vacuum operated blue thing between the selonoids. I do not have an inline fuel pump. Supposedly the kit did not come with one and I also do not have a FPR that I am aware of. He said at the time there was a kit that did not include the fuel pump available too. It is exactly the same as the 5176 but without the pump. Everyone that I have talked to claims the Walbro255 should be enough. Maybe I need an adjustable FPR.
The guy helping me install it has the same kit so let me ask him if he has the instructions.
Do you have that part number for the inline fuel pump?
Thanks

If someone can scan the instructions in and email them to me that would be great. Unless you are local and I can pick them up, or copy them. I am planning on installing this on Saturday so I need them by then. I will even pay for them if necessary.
Thanks

You need a pump that is capable of delivering the fuel at 90psi. If you are putting the kit on a relatively stock LT1, that would mean you need a pump that can deliver at least 225#/HR at that pressure. Can the Walbro do it? To my knowledge, NOS never sold the 5176 kit without an inline pump. I had one of the first 5176 kits they sold in 1995, and it came with an exceptionally high quality Bosch pump, NOS PN 15764. Later kits got a cheaper pump, PN 15763-S. I would verify the ability of the Walbro to meet the pressure AND flow requirements. Generally, as the system pressure rises, the flow capacity of the pump drops.
And you need to understand how the "fuel" part of the kit works. The blue thing isn't "vacuum operated". It is a converted CO2 pressure regulator, and it takes nitrous at 900+psi, and reduces the pressure to about 30psi. The rubber hose from the blue pressure regulator runs into a "tee" added to the vacuum line that runs from the intake manifold to the STOCK fuel pressure regulator. When you hit the spray, a pressure is sent through that line, and causes the entire vacuum line to the FPR to reverse from vacuum to pressure. That closes off the fuel return line, and pushes the rail pressure up to 85-90psi. You do NOT need an AFPR with the kit... in fact I found one AFPR that would not work correctly with the kit, not allowing the pressure to rise like it should.
A caution... do NOT run the kit with stock RP injectors.... they do not like 90psi, and can lock closed, detroying your engine an a matter of miliseconds..... I suspect a lot of people have run the RP's without failure, but is is always a possibility. You want to switch to a pintle-style injector, like a Bosch, Denso, FMS, SVO, etc.
Also, do NOT run that kit with the stock platinum plugs. It will either blow the platinum pucks off the plugs and you will have a 0.100" gap, or the ground electrodes will overheat and burn off. If the plugs are glowing, you run the chance of severe detonation. You need to look at an AutoLite 104, or an NGK TR6, both of which are one heat range colder than stock. And gap them to 0.035". An MSD box is also a good idea.
If you want the instructions for the kit, and would like to learn more about nitrous in general, there is a book available that has a whole chapter on installing the 5176 in an LT1, with pictures.

Well that is about the most info I have gotten to date. I have gotten ahold of the guy I bought the NOS from and there was a pump. He is selling that to me now and it is the older Bosch unit. I also have SVO injectors. I am planning on replacing the plugs too. I have a MSD 6AL and a MSD window switch too. So I think I am covered. I am going to go to the book store now to see about that book.
Thanks

Just give NOS Tech a call at (714) 546-0592. I couldn't find my manual for my 5177 kit. They emailed me the whole thing for free. I then, of course, found the manual. But the pdf. file comes out larger and easier to diagram in the extras.
