Adding a TNT Kit. I need some advice on how much to spray

New to the nitrous game so I though I would come to the experts. First thing is my setup is configured around running NA. I will not change that since my main goal it so run NA. But I'm tired of being challenged by guys(mustangs/f-bodys) with strokers/nitrous/blowers and any combination of them. So..I just though I would throw a kit on and see what happens.

Now..my setup is blueprinted and ballanced 355. Ross pistons with 2cc dome, eagle 4340 H beam 6" rods, Stock ported lt1 heads(12:1 CR), solid roller 255/263 657/628 on a 110 ls with a 40 deg. overlap if I remember right. I'm still running a stock crank and a 255 intank fuel pump. Moser 9" with 4.71 gears/spool with a 28x10.5 et drag. Last dyno was 434/410 through the 9" and 4.71 gears. I'm a 6 speed and shift at 6900-7000 rpm and cross through the traps at about 6600-6700 at 123-124.

Now for the questions. How much hp can the stock crank hold. I was thinking of a 100-150 shot. The 100 would prolly put me at the 530-550 rwhp and the 150 would maybe put me at the 580-600 rwhp range. torque would go way up. So how much would my setup be able to take fairly safe. I plan on running a window switch and an external fuel system pulling 116 race fuel. Also gonna run a high pressure pump on the external system so I can get better atomization(sp) on the fuel side.

Is there a big problem with going into 5th gear with this kind of power. I was told if you can make the shift that spraying in 5th isn't a problem. Is this true. I do have a 4.57/locker setup in my shop that I could set up in another center seciton to swap out..but that gets into seting the car up for nitrous and again..I'm not real hip on doing that.

I know guys are making 600 rwhp+ on stock cranks with blower cars but I know that nitrous hits harder. You cam guys...is my cam completly wrong for nitrous so should I keep it to my 100-150(200?) shot..or stay with the 100 only?

Sorry so long but I just need some advice from peopel that have some experience.

Thanks guys

Tim

Tim,

with strokers/nitrous/blowers and any combination of them
Are we power adder guys getting to you?

I think the stock crank can take a 150 shot safely - assuming the safety precautions that you are doing w/ an external fuel system and VP116. A 1 gallon fuel cell w/ a low psi holley pump should do the trick. How many people do u know who has broken the stock crank?

I also am guessing you would be lowering the shift points as well - correct?

I personally would run a 4.30 or even 4.10 gear w/ the 28" - should be perfect on the gas (b/w 135-138mph I would think).

You know its true - you can't have it the best of both worlds - either set up for N/A or for juice (I would do the juice personally).

How would your N/A times suffer w/ a 4.10 gear? I have seen a couple cars shift 5th (like Mike B. in Shreveport) but b/c of the overdrive - it seems like the rpm dropoff is pretty severe. Plus, how strong is 5th gear?

I grabbed 5th on the nitrous on I-10 and it seems to pully really well (178mph on I-10) but what does my butt-o-meter know?.

I just say you build the custom turbo setup you were talking about and forget all this juice talk. Who need 600rwhp when you can try for 900 or a 1000?

Madhu...lol...nah..you don't bother me. I love your car. Its all the pesky mustang boys I'm talking about. I just plan on putting the kit on just for the ones that want to run me and have a power adder. I still don't want to set it up for nitrous only and I would prolly loose .5 to .7 if I went to a 4.10 gear. Even though all the unanaturally asperated boys that have raced me still haven't beat me but I'm just gonna put it on so I can run the power adder for power adder.

I know no one that broke a stock crank so I feel good with the little shot I plan on running. If I do anything I would set up the other center section to swap in if I wanted to see what it would do set up that way. Or throw in the 4.57s. Acording to my calcualtions if I shifted at 6700ish on the jug would put me in 5th at 120ish. Which is right at 5000 rpms in 5th...and its good for 170 at 7000....lol. For some reason I don't see me makin that..lol.

Plans are still for the turbo..but that is down the road. I would have to start over completly with the motor and I'm having too much fun right now..lol. Before that I hope to do afr heads...F.A.S.T system and prolly convert over to a th 350/400 with a brake. So..its a never ending process. I think with just the tranny change I would be in the 10s pretty solid. And spray on that who knows...hehehehe. Its hard for me to do that thought..Ilove to shift this thing.

Now...when you gonna do whta I told ya to on your car..lol

Hey Tim, I too am going to spray next year (NA is my focus as well) Just need to go faster, ya know?

Anyway, your crank should not have a problem with that....in fact Jason (dont know his last name off hand) is spraying a 300 shot on his car and going like 9.5@140....on a stock crank!

150 Shot should be fine. I spray mine in 5th as well because I run out of gear with 26" slicks and 4.10's I really need 3.90's. Anyway my only concern you may want to think about is your cylinder pressures below 3500 rpm. If your heads are o'ringed it probably won't be a problem but otherwise I would try to make sure you waited until 3500-4000 before I turned on the juice. Just my 2 cents. More power to the power adders!

I will prolly set the window switch to come on at 4500-5000. I have a hard enough time hooking this thing up now. Plus I launch off a two step at 5000 and it bogs alittle..prolly down to 4000 then reves right back up. My shift extensions never get below 4500...prolly closer to 4700 beign the lowest on my 1-2 shift. Best 60' so far is a 1.523...hope to be in the 1.4s with alittle suspension tuning and leaving at a higher rpm.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Anyone have any comments on how the cam will react with nitrous...or is that a stupid question. I asked the guy who did my heads/assembled my block how the motor would like nitrous. His answer was "everything likes nitrous"..lol.
