Question *****nx kit and timing*****

I bought the a nitrous kit from nx and it should be here by friday. It is a 100-150hp wet kit and it has all the goodies, w/s, wot switch, fuel pressure safety switch, blowdown tube, purge, bottle heater, remote opener and ngk-tr6 plugs. My question is this, is it absolutely nessesary to retard the timing? The nx website said it is supposed to work on my car stock, but I do have a jet stage II chip, which I am sure advances the timing. I am debating whether or not I need to buy the msd digital 6. I have the money but dont want to spend it unless it is absolutely nessesary. Does any body have this box? What kind of performance gains did you notice from the box? Also what should I gap the plugs at? Do I gap them the same if I buy the ign.? Where did you mount the box at?
thanks in advance for the help.

Well to answer your question I'll at least give you this: You should have some means of scanning your car to see if your PCM is pulling timing out now. If so, and if a large ammount is being pulled, then you will need to somehow take that advance back out before you run with the NO2. I believe the PCM will only pull 12* timing out, (I may be wrong there). I believe the norm is to pull 2* advance / 50hp increase via NO2, (I could be wrong there too). Anyway.... me being the noise I am (Only cause I am shopping around for a setup myself), would you mind giving up where you got the system and how much you gave for it?? You can reply via E-mail if you wish..... jd30@team.camaroz28.com. Thanks.

No it's not absolutely neccesary to pull timing. Is it a good idea? yes. You really should have some sort of an aftermarket ignition anyway. So just pony up the dough for a dig. 6 or similar. You will be happy you did. Especially if you see a lot of KR on the juice.
Gap your plugs between .035 and .040.

Well I already bought the digital 6 and a msd coil, so how much should I retard the ignition when on nitrous? I am going to be using about 100 shot maybe 150.

It really depends on a couple things but NOS reccomends 2 degrees for every 50hp of n2o so that would be 4 degrees retard for a 100 shot and so on but I have used 0 degrees on a 100-125 and worked well. Now on a 150 I would pull 3-4 degrees or just add some octane like 5 gallons of 104 racing unleaded. It is up to you but you should try a couple different ones and see what works best for you. You could start off with 4degrees and go down untill you get some knock retard then go back up one degree. Just my .02

How do you know when you are getting knock retard? I guess I have never got it thats why I dont know what happens or what it feels like.

You need some sort of a scan tool. Such as the LT1 scanmaster.

With the NX kits they are designed to work on a stock car with no timing pulled for 50-150 shots. I used to run a car with a lt4 hot cam and a 150 shot with no timing pulled and had no problems. Of course i was using 110 oct race fuel.

I forgot to mention that I have a jet stage II chip installed that already advances the timing so I am pretty sure that even though the nx kit is designed to work with the stock timing, that I will have to pull some timing.

Just talked to the jet people and they said at WOT the chip advances the timing 6-8 degrees. Might have a problem, digital 6 at most will only take 9.9 degrees of timing out. Will this be enough of a timing retard. Granted the nx people claim that the kit is supposed to be run on stock timing, should I be safe taking out 9.9 degrees?

Personally I think you should take that jet chip out but it really depends how much you are spraying. If you are spraying 100 shot don't worry about but if more to be safe either take some timing out or add some race fuel. Later

Last time I was at the track a guy installed his jet module on a LS1 and went 3 tenths slower!

I don't care what NX says. It's crazy to run a 150hp shot with stock timing on an LT1. The stock PCM already has a lot of timing at WOT. And nitrous has a faster burn rate than gasoline. It's a recipe for fried pistons, especically given the hyperpathetic pistons GM supplied us with. I run 4 degrees retarded with 150hp shot.

YMMV.
