There is camp grounds all throughout the rural areas of Cali, especially up in the San Bernadino mountains. I used to go up by Barton Flats all the time and hike up to Jack Straw and stay the night, sleeping under the stars. The only downside to that area, any smellables need to be hanging high up in the tree. Also, anything you wear can't have a scent or you'll be sucking face w/ a big brown thing

If bears aren't your thing, there is a spot which I've enjoyed about 10-15 min. south of SB. I think Point Hueneme, which you stay a hop, skip, and a jump from the beach.

Lake Isabella is also a spot I've experienced in the past, where has camp spots surrounding the lake where you can go fishing and boating. You can also do some rafting at the Kern river and if you feel lucky, pan for gold

Cali has many National Parks, you could also look into those and other camp grounds in CA tooling around Google

I have been camping hundreds of times, I can't remember all the names though. For the beach, some of the places I have been off the top of my head are Sycamore Canyon, McGrath, Thornhill Broom, also Carpenteria is nice but its a bit further north I think. One of my other favorites as a kid was Mt Pinos which is right by Gorman. If you are into dirtbikes/offroad vehicles Gorman is sweet, (pretty close to me as well ) and for dunes check out Pismo or Glamis. I have been to tons of other places as well some desert camping. I remember going out to Anza Borrego and Joshua tree as a kid. Watch out for the jumping cactus man those things hurt There is some nice rock climbing around Joshua tree as well I believe, I remember going out there with my brother who is a rock climbing maniac. Anyways tons of places to go and a wide range of options too, whether you like the beach, forest or desert.
