I remember about 5 years ago they installed these testing devices that sense how much emissions your car puts out, they were putting them on the freeways cause thats where most people give a good amount of gas, so it would detect any gross polluters and if they spotted you pushing out to much the camera would snap and then send a letter stating you must fix the problem. Not sure if this ever worked well and if they kept it, anyone know about it, or if its still in use?

I've never heard about it, are you sure it was California that had that and it seems like this type of think would be almost impossible to make.

yup.. CA has them and I hear that they are going on onramps really soon. unmanned ones that look like those things that tells you your speed that are on the side of the road. Just get enough speed and coast through it or if ur really dirty, turn off the car.

I hear that in Torrance, they will ask you to pull over and take a sniffer test. You can refuse them without bad effects. jsut tell them you have a meeting, emergency... whatever.. they can't detain you there.

Yep it's true in Torrance they do block the main streets off and they make you pull over, so they can test and look at your car. They only do this a couple times a year, but they are pretty cool about it i think since i have my cutout open almost all the time. I haven't got a ticket my exhaust yet! Also watch out when you exit the freeways, sometimes they have the exits blocked off so you have to go thru their check point so they can look at your car and test it.

I have heard about these, but have never seen one. I drive the LA freeways everyday too (not in my Z, that is just for the weekend). The state is really wasting their time and money on this one IMHO.
